(Connecting with a Relative)

It is really special for us to meet one of James’s distant relatives on this trip. PJG is very keen on the pursuit of genealogy research and he has studied his earliest genealogy dating back to about 1720. Alison, a relative on his mother’s side through a shared great-great grandfather, was also a fan of genealogy and they met online through ancestry.com three years ago. Alison is the granddaughter of James’ great-grandfather’s brother. (Isabel’s grandfather John Lowe). In fact, Eve had met the entire Lowe family as they lived in the same neighborhood together in Liverpool. Alison never knew that her father had a blood relative in America and they were all excited to meet each other. Three years ago they found each other on the Internet, and to meet in person was really wonderful!

Alison and her mother, Eve, took a three hour taxi ride to London. Her mother had some difficulty walking, so they chose a taxi, and they knew the taxi driver, so the taxi fare would not be so expensive. We met them at their hotel and then later they treated us to a Turkish restaurant for dinner!!

This afternoon we had the famous English afternoon tea together at their hotel, Bloomsbury. We ordered the English Cream Refreshment, a relatively simple afternoon tea with tea, scones, clotted cream and jam. The English name sounds like cream is put into tea, but in fact cream is eaten with tea 😅 Listening to the British accent of Alison and her mother, drinking British afternoon tea, I suddenly feel that I am not myself 😁

Alison and Eve were very friendly, lovely, amiable and humorous, sharing a lot of interesting stories, and they are very focused on their shared history. PJG and I were delighted to meet them, and were grateful to them for coming all the way to London to meet us. This wonderful experience will be a long lasting memory of the importance of maintaining connections with our past.
