Abbotsbury

After staying three short nights in Helsinki, we flew to England today. Before going to London, PJG rented a car and we drove to the southwest part of England, specifically to retrace some of the locations his father had visited in 1949 as well as his mother’s former residence.

It was quite a packed itinerary staying a short time in each place. The first stop was the Cathedral in Salisbury. His father was there in 1949.

The second stop was Abbotsbury, a very small village … I did not find out what the Chinese name is. This is James’s mother Isabel’s former residence. Isabel was about 5 years old when his family moved there because her father became the village doctor.

When Isabel was 15 years old, her father died, Isabel and her mother and sister moved out of the village. Here it is really beautiful …. a typical traditional southwest British south village, large tracts of green grassland, dotted with a very distinctive thatched house roofs. It is said that this type of roof has been around for more than 300 years, historically, the this type of roof is relatively popular throughout Europe, but the British love to retain the tradition, so the thatched roof is now more common in Britain than other European countries.

It’s a really beautiful place to be, and at every turn it feels like it could be a postcard or an oil painting.

The following four photos are from the graveyard at the village church of James’ Grandfather. He was a respected doctor in the village. Apparently he would often take Isabel on his rounds in the village homes for his doctor calls.

Walking in the cemetery, it’s a little windy today, look at my messy hair.

PJG drove for over 7 hours after getting off the plane to settling into our Airbnb. We will have a good rest tonight and tomorrow we will continue PJG’s trip to follow in the footsteps of his father in the UK 😊
