Day 4 in Ho Chi Minh City

April 26, 2024, Friday, Day 7 of the Singapore-Vietnam Trip

Today, we have no special plans as the continuous 100-degree Fahrenheit heat makes going out challenging. In the morning, we walked to the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House. This opera house, rich in French colonial architectural style, was fortunately not destroyed during the war and still stands here, symbolizing the city’s history and architectural heritage.

But unfortunately, the opera house was not open to the public unless you purchase a ticket for a show. We discovered that a classical music symphony concert featuring Mozart and Beethoven will be held tomorrow night, so we decided to buy tickets. At the ticket office, the tickets were almost sold out, but we managed to find a few adjacent seats at a very affordable price of 650,000 Vietnamese dong each. After returning to the hotel, we noticed that the back of the ticket requires formal attire! PJG obviously did not bring any formal clothes, but fortunately, I have a long dress that is passable for the occasion. Now, we’re a bit worried whether PJG will be refused entry?

While walking from the opera house to the Saigon River, we discovered that we could take a river cruise. The 45-minute tour costs only 339,000 Vietnamese dong per person, so we bought tickets for 5 PM, looking forward to enjoying the beautiful sunset from the boat. For lunch, we tried the locally famous Vietnamese pancake for the first time, and they were quite delicious. However, the second time we tried Vietnamese pho, it still couldn’t beat the taste in America.

The ticket girl was very friendly.
Mei Linh Square across from the pier
- The statue of Tran Hung Dao in the square is of a famous general in Vietnamese history, known for his valiant efforts in repelling the Mongol invasions in the 13th century.

在Grand酒店20层的咖啡馆,看到的西贡河和美灵广场 – From a café on the 20th floor of the Grand Hotel, you can see the Saigon River and Me Linh Square.

At 5 PM, we boarded the Saigon River cruise. Although the skyline along the way wasn’t particularly stunning, the experience was very pleasant and enjoyable, accompanied by the soothing sounds of a violinist and the cool breeze blowing from the river.

Free fresh coconut juice, and we noticed that the coconuts in Vietnam are smaller than those in Malaysia.

For dinner, we enjoyed a lavish meal at a restaurant called, “Secret Garden.” Each dish provided a unique and delightful taste experience. It was our first time having the distinctive lotus root and a very special vegetable called “Tonkin flower,” which is a typical Vietnamese delicacy. It has a light, perfume-like fragrance and a wonderful taste. We ordered four dishes, accompanied by a beer and two cocktails, with a total cost of 1,125,000 Vietnamese dong, approximately equivalent to 45 US dollars.

The restaurant is located in a very inconspicuous small alley.
Upon entering the restaurant, the “Secret Garden” was bustling with vibrant conversations and laughter.

It was a lot of food and the waitress was surprised we conquered it all!

  1. I’m sorry you aren’t able to do everything you want because of the heat. I would have stayed in the air conditioned hotel and not gone anywhere. My body is heat intolerant!

Hoping you will be able to look inside the Opera House, even if they deny entry to the symphony.

What a wonderful way to spend the evening – on a sunset cruise with a cool breeze. The cruise violinist was very lively and wonderful to hear. Your Secret Garden dinner also sounded wonderful.
