Sunday, August 5th
It’s another hot day, and it’s a challenge to go out in the burning sun.
Capitoline Hill
One of the seven hills of Rome, Capitoline Hill has been an important religious and political center since the beginning of the city. The AirBnB host told us that this place is known as “Mile Zero”, because ancient Rome started here.
The weather is so hot, and therefore no more mood or strength to visit here, our next target is the Trevi Fountain.
Trevi Fountain
Also known as the Roman Wishing Pool, I read about the history of the Trevi Fountain, its construction and the many legendary anecdotes. It is the largest and most famous Baroque fountains in Rome. It receives tens of thousands of tourists every day. Apparently, almost 3,000 euros a day are thrown into the Trevi Fountain for good luck. The money is used to support Rome’s poor. However also, people often try to steal coins from the fountain, which is illegal.
When we went there it was a sea of people. The pool was crowded with people taking pictures. The weather was hot and the experience was stolen. We lost interest in taking pictures by the pool, so we only stood in the cool shadows. Let the crowded crowd😂
The Pantheon
The Pantheon is one of the great religious works of ancient Rome that highlights the achievements of ancient Roman architectural art. The structure of the Pantheon is very simple, the main body is round and the top is covered with a dome. The Romans were experts in the techniques for making large-scale domes which were used to increase the interior of temples and other buildings. The highest point of the dome of the Pantheon has a circular hole 8.9m in diameter to bring in daylight which is actually the only source of light for the Pantheon. Because it is an open-air structure, many people ask about the problems of rain. In fact, the Pantheon is equipped with a drainage system, which consists of many holes in the floor below the hole.
The two of us who were thoroughly defeated by the heat, left the Pantheon and walked back to our cool apartment.
