Tuesday, July 24
We went to the garage in Vienna to pick up our car in the morning – parking for three days was only 10.20 euros – a very cheap parking garage. We drove back to the apartment to load up the luggage and departed for Salzburg. Halfway through the drive we came across the town of Melk and decided to stop for lunch. The town is best known for the Melk Abbey, founded in 1089. This Baroque style building was built between 1702 and 1736. For some reason, there is also a large number of Chinese tourists here.
Together with the stopover for lunch, it took about 5 hours before we finally arrived at our apartment in Salzburg. The owner of this AirBnB was very enthusiastic to give us a full tour of the place and gave us several recommendations for tourist attractions.
Located in the western part of Austria, Salzburg is the fourth largest city in Austria. It is located in the northern foothills of the Alps and situated next to large mountains, including the Festungsberg and the Mönchsberg. Just outside of the city you are surrounded by towering mountains. Our apartment sits next to green hills which along with the old city’s architecture, makes Salzburg a special place. Salzburg has a long history and has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age. Salzburg’s German name means, “salt castle”, named after the nearby salt mines and castle. In old times, the economic prosperity of the city was derived from the sale of salt. It is also the birthplace of the musical prodigy Mozart; the location of the film, “The Sound of Music”, and the town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Personally, I had never heard of this place before coming here. When we went for a walk in the old town, we saw the castle on the hill, the Salz River and the Baroque cathedral at the foot of the mountain. The Baroque buildings all over the city form a beautiful picture under the illumination of the evening sunset.
I feel that if a city has a mountain with a river running through it, it has a soul. This is an extraordinary city.
Tomorrow, we will continue to explore the footprints of PJG’s father visit with a small side trip to Innsbruck 😀
