(Innsbruck)

Climb a mountain of English inline below …

Wednesday, July 25

During our first few days in Salzburg, we planned to drive to Innsbruck and pursue PJG’s father’s footprint from 69 years ago. Yesterday we saw that the weather forecast was for no rain today but that it would rain the day after tomorrow, so we decided to make the two hour journey today. The middle part of the drive goes back through Germany and not long after leaving Salzburg we come to a big traffic jam on the motorway. We wondered what the reason for the traffic was and we didn’t know we were about to cross into Germany. It turns out, it was a border inspection and the first time we encountered one in the EU after crossing several borders. But in reality, its just a basic checkpoint where they ask a few questions and you don’t need a passport. Many of the vehicles don’t even need to even stop.  But we were not that lucky. I think because the rear window of our car used a black glass film, so the inspectors couldn’t see in – so they asked us to roll down the rear windows.  Then they asked us where we were going, where we came from, and then wished us a pleasant journey. The traffic jam situation delayed us for more than 20 minutes.

As we approached the mountains, the scenery along the way to Innsbruck was beautiful; the tall mountains, green mountain pastures, and churches dotted around the mountains and the surrounding towns made our drive very enjoyable.

Innsbruck is the fifth largest city in Austria, with approximately 184,000 people in the metropolitan area. It is a wide valley surrounded by mountains, the so-called North Chain is part of the North Lysterton Alps, and to the south are the Patscherkofel and Serles mountains. The Winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck twice; once in 1964 and then in 1976. So it has also become a famous ski resort.

The black and white photo below was taken by PJG’s father in Innsbruck. According to his notes on the back of the photo and from other photos, PJG basically determined that the photo was taken on the Hafelekar Peak. So we followed his path up the mountain with the cable cars just like his father did.

I don’t know what the cable car was like 69 years ago. Today, the cable car going up the mountain is divided into three sections. From Innsbruck to the Hungerburg station we used the funicular then we get the first cable car to the Seegrube station at 6250 feet above sea level. Then finally we change to another cable car that takes us to the Hafelekar peak, that reaches 7650 feet above sea level.

Seemingly wild goats roam the area, but you can see different marks on them showing who owns them.

Going up to the peak of Hafelekar, we were really amazed by the magic of nature. The rolling mountains disappeared into the horizon. The vast and spectacular scene is difficult to describe in any language and the camera lens also has trouble fully capturing the amazing beauty and wonders of nature.

Unfortunately the search for the exact location for PJG’s father’s photo was unsuccessful. The shape of the top of the mountain behind his father seems very unique and should have been recognizable. We climbed two parts of the mountain in our search, but the mountains in the distance never lined up like the background in his photo. It’s possible that we just just weren’t at the precise location that would align the mountains in the distance to give the appearance in the photo. Or maybe they used a telephoto lens which would have distorted the appearance. In any event, although we can’t copy the photo position today, the scenery here is still incredible and made the journey well worth it. So we say thank you to PJG’s father for bringing us here to see such a beautiful and amazing view.

这张就算是PJG的复制照片吧 😅 This is PJG’s version of his fathers photo. 😅

At 5 o’clock we had to leave Innsbruck because we still had the 2 hour return drive back to the apartment. On the way back, due to the changing traffic information, the car navigation system directed us on to a quaint country road, and we unexpectedly harvested the tranquility of the German towns dotting the mountains.

The birth and development of each town usually centers around a church.

It is difficult to climb a mountain, even with a cable car! But the scenery you encounter after going up the mountain is unparalleled. This is also quite similar to how life is. Many things in life are difficult to do, but if you stick to it and make the effort, the gains will also be unparalleled.

  1. Zhaoyang, google translated your name to Xiaowen, at least I assume that is what your sister, Wangwei wrote!
