3 (Beautiful Prague Part III)

Friday, July 20

Today we are hiking through the city again and our first stop is Wenceslas Square, about 10 minutes from our apartment. The Wenceslas Square is actually an avenue in the shape of a very narrow rectangle. In the Middle Ages, it was once a horse market. At the end of the square is the Wenceslas Monument, with the inscription, “St. Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia, our Prince, don’t let neither us, nor those in the future, die.” And behind the sculpture is the Czech National Museum in neoclassical architecture.

It’s a pity that the time we went, the sun was just behind the monument, so it was difficult to see the details of the monument.

After being in Prague, I found I especially love the architecture here, particularly the use of earthy colors, such as yellow, khaki, camel, green, earthen powder, etc. These colors convey a kind of neutrality, calmness, and simplicity. The rich earth tones add a special taste to Prague, which I have not seen in London, Paris or Amsterdam.

The second stop on our walking city tour is the dancing building. In this city full of classical architecture, this modern building that dances on the banks of the Vltava River represents the urban development side of Prague. The building was erected in 1996 and designed by the prestigious world-class architects Vlado Milunić and Frank O. Gehry. The design of the dancing building is inspired by the famous dancing stars, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers. The cement building on the right represents Fred Astaire and the glass building is his partner Ginger Rogers.

The clash of classical and modern architecture

Our third stop is Kampa Park, where you can see the Charles Bridge from a different angle from the banks of the Vltava River. Here’s a sampling of the many modern sculptures in the park.

People enjoying their food beside the beauty of the Charles Bridge
The back of someone is also very charming because of the beauty 😅

Crossing through Kampa Park, on the other side of the Charles Bridge, we found a tiny pedestrian alley controlled by a red/green street light. Special enough.

From the other side of the Charles Bridge, we saw many swans posing for pictures 🙂

The portrait photography option with the iPhone perfectly emulates the function of a telephoto lens!

Our short three day trip to Prague is over. Although it was short and there are many places we would have loved to have visited, the uniqueness and beauty of this classical yet modern city was a true gem. From sunset to sunrise, strolling on the Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square, covered in cobble stone, you can see three different Pragues in one day: the romance of the Prague evening; the quietness of the morning to reflect on the deep history of the city;  and the artistic and lively atmosphere enabled by the afternoon sunshine. I am sure that this romantic city presents even more different beautiful scenery to the people who visit in different seasons.
