(Montmartre)

Friday,  June 29th

Today we went to Montmartre, a hill 130m above Paris with an artistic soul. This area is said to be a perfect combination of romance and art. Many famous painters from here: Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, etc., all lived and created here and many famous paintings were born here. Also many movies were filmed here: Emily’s Wishful World, Moulin Rouge, Midnight Paris, etc.

The white domes of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and the Church of St. Pierre show a strong religious atmosphere at the Place du Tertre. Many painters who paint and sell pictures exude the “art of randomness” here. The Hare’s Bar (where many Picasso-like painters often go) and the laundry boat (the place Picasso was in when he were poor) are pervasive. With a mysterious atmosphere, the Wall of “I Love You” witnesses the romance of modern people (including us). Wandering through the centuries-old cobbled stone streets and imagining those artists who had fallen or were making and struggling here it seems as if they were there while we were passing by.

Looking up at the white dome of the Sacred Heart Basilica (Sacre Coeur)
- Viewing Paris from the hill, a street statue performer in the right corner. Standing still in the hot sun, she is desperate.
– This is the back of the church … yes, that’s right! Standing there it feels just like a painting! Hard to believe with your own eyes!
The side of the church, again really like a giant picture!
- The shops on the hillside square of the church, where the church in the background looks more like a huge picture backdrop.
Selling pictures …
A lovely looking restaurant

Here in the hilly square many artists draw portraits of tourists. This was my first time to see such a large market for painters, who would draw a sketch for about 100 euros – not sure whether you also give a tip. We didn’t try it, but we should!

The Wall of I Love You – Initiated by the French musician, Frédéric Baron. Since 1992 he has collected more than 1,000 “I Love You’s,” handwritten in over 300 languages. The wall was established on Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2001. Since then it has attracted a lot of tourists coming to take pictures, and, of course,  PJG and I also came to punch the card.

I didn’t post the one of us kissing 😇
I wonder who wrote this Chinese?
This restaurant looks like it has special food
- A small street vendor selling seafood… he saw me taking a photo and gave me a pose. Unfortunately, I just missed it.

The famous Moulin Rouge, established in 1899, where the Cancan dance was popularized. The “Better Times” of the “Golden Age” considered by the European upper class was a period of peace and optimism. The opening of the Moulin Rouge is a symbol of cultural prosperity. The red windmill is a landmark of this area.

We spent a leisurely time strolling Monmartre and were not specifically looking for any particularly well-known places – we experienced the feelings and inspirations that the cathedrals, the numerous buildings and the beautiful scenery of the gardens had brought to many famous painters here. This is an enjoyable place to gradually taste the place of Parisian art in Paris.

I forgot to mention that when we first arrived here and had just come out of the subway, there were many people handing out cards to passing pedestrians. They were like the domestic flyers, and then we saw many shops that do African braids (Or French braid). Like many metropolitan cities with many immigrants, this place is likely the French-African area of Paris.
