Verona is an Italian city with a long history. In 89 BC Verona became a colony of the Roman Empire then after several centuries of war and power transfers, the Italians finally defeated Austria in the 1866 Unification War and Verona returned to the Kingdom of Italy. This city is very similar to many other European cities; there are mountains, rivers, castles, churches and ancient buildings of various styles. Especially famous here is the Verona Arena. This Roman-style arena is the third largest amphitheater in the world.
Today’s Verona temperature forecast is 95 degrees, so we intend to modify the order of going out – exploring the old town in the morning then back to the apartment in the hottest part of the afternoon. It’s pretty early to go out at 9am. When we go out, I can already feel the heat, and the humidity seems to be very high. Our AirBnB is in the hills and there is a funicular here and we planned to take the cable car down, but when we arrived, it was not open! The funicular opens at 9:30! However, the scenery on the mountain is beautiful, overlooking Verona, a small city. Verona also has red brick roofs, but the color is different from that of Prague. It is a deeper tile reddish brown and not as stunning.
Since there was no cable car to ride we walked down the mountain. In fact, when we went out, we smelled the smell of natural gas near our apartment. We guessed that the gas was from the AirBnb and wanted to inform the homoeowner. But as we walked down the mountain, we heard sirens roaring, and the exit to our walkway was blocked. We went around to another exit and from there we saw the gas pipeline on the road along the Adige River spewing gas high into the air. It looked very dangerous and the workers were quickly trying to solve the problem. The police had blocked the roads around and there was huge traffic congestion. I hope they will safely solve it as soon as possible.
Plaza Delle Erbe (Square)
We made our way down the mountain and crossed the river to the Square which can be traced back to the Roman Empire. It is now a market with stalls selling fruits, vegetables and various tourist souvenirs.
Juliet balcony
Not far from the Plaza Della Erbe is the Juliet balcony. Yes, it is the balcony from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet romance. Of course this is a purely a tourist attraction, but Verona can do this because the story background of Romeo and Juliet is set here. Although the balcony that never really existed here, it attracts many visitors to Verona, and it is said that touching the breast of Juliet sculpture in the courtyard will bring good luck to your love. You can tell that many people here have touched the chest, and of course, we also will. 😄😂
Verona Arena
The Verona arena was built in the first century AD, but an earthquake in 1117 almost completely destroyed the outer ring of the arena. Today it is still used as a theater, and large-scale opera performances are held every year. When we went there, they were preparing the stage here, probably for some Egyptian drama, because we saw many large-scale stage props of the Egyptian theme.
While looking for a lunch spot, we crossed the Adige River on the oldest bridge in Verona, known as the Ponte Pietra. The bridge is a Roman brick arch bridge built in 100 BC.
The small lunch restaurant is next to Ponte Pietra. Although the food is average, you can sit in the shade and take a break to see the hills and the churches and buildings on the hill slopes.
After eating lunch, it was already 2 in the afternoon. And according to our plan, we hid from the sun in the afternoon and returned to the apartment for a rest.
