Thursday, July 19
We have left Berlin, and in summary regarding the food we had: there was nothing stunning.
Berlin Snack
Currywurst is a favorite German street food, but it didn’t seem very unique because it really just tasted like curry-flavored hot dogs. It has been one of Berlin’s local favorites since someone came across curry powder from the British in 1949.
Berlin cuisine
Pork knuckle is one of the most famous dishes in Germany. Although traditionally it is prepared slow cooked but the restaurant we went to deep fried it which sounded very tasty. We were prepared to wait a while since on the menu it said it would take at least 30 minutes to prepare. Actually, we waited more than an hour for the dish to come! The fried crispy skin tasted really good, but there was basically no taste inside. I was a little disappointed 😁
Vietnamese cuisine
We encountered this small restaurant while waiting for the Markisches museum to open. The restaurant sign says Vietnamese Thai food, but the lantern is a typical Japanese restaurant lantern, so it is a mixed Asian cuisine restaurant which we found was typical for all the Asian restaurants in Berlin, especially a Vietnamese and Japanese combination. It turned out that this was a very good place with delicious food at a decent price.
Berlin cuisine
Anthony Bourdain was a famous celebrity chef, author and television personality. Since I came to the United States, I began to get to know him through his shows and following his travel programs. He travels around the world talking about local cuisine, culture and meeting different people who share his point of view. His show has won an Emmy. He has been to several cities in China, including an episode in Harbin. After airing his latest episode in Berlin last month, we said we would visit the restaurants he talked about. But shortly after the Berlin episode, he committed suicide while making a new episode in Paris. It was very, very shocking to us and to many Americans.
This restaurant / meat shop was one of the places Anthony Bourdain had been to in his last Berlin episode. We asked the boss if she remembered him and she said of course she did and recalled his visit with us. While we were having dinner, we also asked the people sitting next to us if they knew Anthony, who all said yes they knew him, but didn’t actually know he had been here to record his show. The food was traditional German food and tasted pretty good – like mother’s comfort food.
Pizza
Pizza has become a good choice when we didn’t know what to eat and the pizza from this very busy restaurant was really good. This was actually the first time I ordered a whole pizza for myself. I guess I can never say I don’t like pizza anymore, haha 😂
I feel people here in Berlin eat more casually which means they just buy something simple and eat where ever they like. There are a lot of small pizza, hamburger restaurants, and some may not be called restaurants, because they are more like small temporary pavilions with a pizza stove where they put a few tables and chairs with umbrellas next to. There are also a lot of Turkish immigrants, especially in the area where we stayed, so there were lots of Doner Kebab restaurants, big and small. We’ve tried it in Ghent and Antwerp so we didn’t try any here. Overall, compared to the US and the cities we’ve been to, Berlin has the lowest prices. Someone with six euros one can have a pretty good meal and if eating at those doner kebab places, it can be even cheaper.
