We left Paris this morning and took the Thayles high-speed train from Paris to Brussels the capital of Belgium. The train took about 1.5 hours followed by the intercity express train to Ghent, about an hour away. We will stay in Ghent for four nights. This is a small port city. The reason for staying in Ghent is to use it as a home base. During the day, we will day trips to the surrounding cities, such as Bruges.
It was quite smooth getting to Gent. After arriving in Gent, the first thing we encountered was the light rail ticket machine which was really a piece of work. The screen was ~ no ~ way ~ to ~ be ~ seen~~ Perhaps because the ticket machine at this station is just directly under the hot sun. There is a plastic transparent cover, and the screen can’t be seen clearly and the cover makes it even worse. Every person there was defeated by this machine and left. PJG somehow managed to buy two tickets eventually. The second thing we learned is that the light rail stations around the train station seem to be a bit confusing with multiple directions. It didn’t seem to follow common sense (or we had none). In short, after we bought the tickets and got on the bus, we found that we were took the train going to the opposite direction. Haha😄😂😅 First time during the trip a train worth remembering!
Finally arrived at the home of our B&B which was in a building built in 1830. After we settled in, we walked around a little bit to see the city. After being in Paris, this place was really quiet with a lot less tourists. It possesses a typical European city’s characteristic charm filled with a river, historical buildings, big churches and sculptures and so on.
Good night. Going to Bruges tomorrow!
