(Eating in Amsterdam)

You can chow down some English below …

Wednesday, July 11th

Today is a day of travel. In the morning, we took the light rail and high-speed train to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and took a one hour flight to Berlin, Germany. We don’t like to be late, so we got to the airport with a few hours to spare. Now, we’re sitting in the waiting room, so I’ll just sum up the few meals worth recording that we had in Amsterdam.

Western / Dutch

This is the lunch we ate at the small island town of Marken. PJG’s father took photos in front of this restaurant still called Land En Zeezicht 70 years later! We don’t know if he ate here, but it’s a good guess. Not only is the scenery excellent, but I had a most delicious smoked Eel sandwich 😍😍. The rich smoked eel flavor combined with the soft texture of the eel combined with the flavor of arugula and a little crispy bread. It’s the perfect bite. No doubt it’s the best I have ever eaten 😃 … PJG’s beef croquettes were also very delicious, he has never had them before. The beef is mashed up with various other ingredients and then dipped, breaded and fried. When you eat it, you spread the ground beef puree mixture onto the slice of bread and eat it like an open faced sandwich. This was a very unexpectedly delicious lunch!

Dutch traditional dish

I heard about this restaurant from a blog I read on the Internet. It is not a special name, just means Mothers. We wanted to experience some real traditional Dutch dishes. They claim that this is one of the few restaurants that still makes these traditional dishes. There is also a selling point that in this place there are many pictures of mothers hanging on the walls. Anyone’s mother. If you take your mother’s photo there, they will hang it up there permanently. We ordered a set menu for two people that comes with various traditional dishes on the menu, including two beef stews, baked potatoes, sausages, apples, cabbage, etc… all of which tasted good. It is definitely much better than the French dinners we ate in Paris. 😅😂

Every dinner plate they use is different. Originally, guests or friends brought in their own plates and they continued the tradition of using unique plates.
Beef stew in a mustard base – a bit like a northern China beef stew, very flavorful.
Special sausages and pork belly (like bacon), with a potato and vegetable puree underneath. This potato vegetable puree is really delicious.

Chinese fried noodles

We didn’t get to try normal Chinese cooking in Amsterdam, because the day we went to the Sichuan restaurant in Chinatown for lunch, they were closed and we didn’t bother to go back. When we first arrived in Amsterdam, I noticed this fast food noodle shop, and today we decided to try it for lunch. It is easy to order, 1) choose noodles, 2) choose a topping, and 3) choose a sauce – then they stir fry it! We both thought it was very good – why can’t they do this in California?

I found the following on the Internet: the store opened in Amsterdam in 2004, and since has expanded to France, Germany, the UK and other places. And now they have one in the United States … but it’s in New York!

Spanish Small Plates

PJG has always liked Spanish tapas. Ever since we had a few very delicious Tapas in Vancouver a few years ago, he has always wanted to relive the delicious food. He found a small family run place near our Airbnb. There were no people in there at the time, but we both looked forward to sitting down. Speaking of Spanish Tapas, Tapas comes from the Spanish word tapar, meaning to cover. Apparently the Spaniards would often use a piece of bread to cover their glass when drinking sherry to keep away the flies. Over time this developed into using a small plate with some snacks on it to cover the glass.  Tapas have gradually evolved from just a snack to a delicious culinary dish. Tapas bars flourished around Spain and more and more restaurants began to use Tapas as their main meal. As a result, this side dish did not disappoint us. Every dish tasted unique and all were delicious.

The very chic Tasca Bellota restaurant
Dates rolled in Bacon – anything with bacon is delicious
Spanish Sausage
Roasted vegetables. The chef used a lot of different kinds of vegetables and each one is perfectly cooked.
The dish was called “Crazy Potatoes” and is served with pickled red onions, corn and a special sauce.
Chicken skewers – with very tender and perfectly roasted chicken thighs.

Western food

This was our last dinner in Amsterdam. The food itself was nothing special, but it was good food and the scenery made everything super good. The place, the Eetcafe, was just on the side of a canal. From here you could hear the bells of the West Church near Anne Frank’s House chiming softly in the breeze with tourists from time to time standing on the bridge to take pictures. A perfect evening meal.

We sat at the corner outside – it was a little windy.

Breaded veal Parmesan, very delicious, the veal is very flavorful and tender.
Pork ribs – a large amount isn’t it? It tasted good, a little dry but good when you pour some sauces on it.

In Amsterdam, like other big cities, you can find delicacies from all around the world. As for the traditional Dutch cuisine, I think it was okay, much like every family’s mother would cook; comfort food. They also seem to eat a lot of potatoes. My favorite in the Netherlands was still the unique smoked eel, and seeing it cooked at the contest was even better!
