We’ve reached the midpoint of our trip and I thought I’d blog a little. We’ve been having a blast sightseeing, eating and people watching. It’s really nice having Zhaoyang blogging for several reasons. Number one, she is way more diligent than me and more importantly it’s a great way to remember all the things we have done. And because she is writing for her family in China and using Chinese, she can write with more feeling (according to her) than she might if writing in English. And because I’m translating for her, with the sometimes unhelpful google, we get to talk about what we did and form a better shared memory of the daily events.
Berlin has been great, but it’s probably not our favorite city so far. Probably partly because its so sprawling and the streets are big with a lot of distance between places so everything involves much more walking to get around. Also, Berlin is probably the worst in terms of signage. We have found ourselves confused in several places trying to figure out a train; a ticket entry; a map, etc.
Our second half of the trip will involve driving through Austria for 12 days, traveling by train through the alps and visiting some awesome places in Italy and ending our trip in Madrid. It’s amazing to think we still are only halfway through the trip!
Tomorrow we’re going to the German Bundestag. It was a little tough getting tickets as they limit the number of people and require an online signup process. After that we’ll go rent our car and have the car for our last evening in Berlin … not sure what if anything we’ll do, but we wanted to have the car ready so we could just pack it up in the morning and be on our way to Prague!
We took a stroll after dinner to a place not far from our apartment where Anthony Bourdain had been in his last episode from Berlin. It was a bar called “Bellman”. We just took some pictures there and then went home. We had been at a restaurant the other day that Bourdain ha eaten at and we were talking to the people sitting next to us who knew Anthony Bourdain but had not heard about his suicide, so it was sort of a shock to them.
How weird that you had to be the one to break the news about Bourdain to a stranger who knew him.
