Day 3 in Singapore

Monday, April 22, 2024, the third day of the Singapore-Vietnam trip

Watching the sunrise! At 6 a.m. this morning, we decided to get up early and walk to Merlion Park to enjoy the sunrise. The park was sparsely populated and tranquil.

Before the Merlion started spouting water, the water surface was as still as a mirror, and we captured many extremely beautiful reflections.

After watching the sunrise, we went to Chinatown in the morning and saw some well-preserved traditional shophouses and historical buildings. These buildings have distinctive Baroque and Victorian architectural elements. We also saw many murals with a strong Chinese flavor. These murals not only add color to the streets of Chinatown but also provide a window for tourists to understand Singapore’s multicultural society and history. On the streets of Chinatown, you will find that these murals continuously tell the story of Singapore, becoming a unique visual and cultural experience.

- Thian Hock Keng Temple, also known as Singapore’s Mazu Temple, was built in 1840 and is the oldest Taoist temple here.

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, located next to the Chinatown Complex.

To our surprise, this temple even had air conditioning!

The monks and devotees are chanting scriptures.
The pedestrian street at the Chinatown Street Market in Kreta Ayer.

This is an image depicting a tea house.
People are drinking tea and reading newspapers, while the grocery store is busy with activity.
A small shop selling wooden clogs and kitchen wares.
On the dining table of a family of three next to the small shop, there is a plump steamed fish, but an unexpected guest has appeared to eat it.
What a peaceful scene! The three children are playing on the bed while the mother is sewing. It feels like I’ve returned to my childhood.

People are watching a Beijing opera performance, while a few children and a foreign friend are buying snacks.
A man selling fruits, vegetables, roasted chicken, and dim sum is introducing durian to the infamous Japanese character Conan.

- What a lively scene! Downstairs, the father is meticulously coloring the lion head for the lion dance, while the children are focused on practicing their drumming skills. Meanwhile, upstairs, the mother and grandmother are busy with household chores, occasionally needing to buy some daily necessities from the street vendors below. They will lower a basket from the window to load the purchased items.
The mask vendor and the three amigos.
中午在Maxwell美食中心吃了午饭 – We had lunch at the Maxwell Food Centre
这个是新加坡版的Laksa,没有槟城版的那种奇怪的味道,还不错 – This is the Singapore version of Laksa. It doesn’t have that strange taste like the Penang version. It’s pretty good.

In the afternoon around 3pm, we took a Grab again to the SkyPark Observation Deck, but unfortunately, due to the lightning detection system predicting thunderstorms, the observation deck was closed again! After seeing our tickets from yesterday, the staff suggested we try again after 5 pm. So this time, we smartly called first to confirm if the observation deck was open, and then we went for the third time, finally successfully making it up to the observation deck and taking in the magnificent views. Although the tickets ended up being free, the round-trip Grab fares for the three trips almost equaled the price of the tickets. Despite this, the beautiful scenery from the observation deck was definitely worth it.

That unique Apple Store
That side is the hotel section where tourists are not allowed to enter.
Overlooking the Gardens by the Bay, with many cargo ships waiting to enter the port in the distance.

Our three-day trip to Singapore is coming to an end, and tomorrow we will head to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During these few days, we mainly stayed in the heart of Singapore, deeply experiencing the modern charm and cultural diversity of this city. Although the constant high temperature and humidity made us feel frustrated and tired, coupled with the higher prices compared to Malaysia, Singapore’s beauty and uniqueness still made this short trip full of memories.

  1. Your sunrise photos are beautiful. I looked up the weather and see getting up early doesn’t get you out of the humid heat.
    Those murals are fantastic.

I’m glad you enjoyed Singapore in spite of the oppressive heat!
