Gardens By The Bay

April 21, 2024, Sunday, Day 2 of the Singapore-Vietnam Trip

We forgot to pickup some pastries for this morning’s breakfast last night, so for the first time, we enjoyed a rare, relatively expensive breakfast at a restaurant! After breakfast, we walked for more than 30 minutes to the famous Gardens by the Bay. Along the way, we unexpectedly discovered an underground passage, which allowed us to avoid the scorching heat for most of the journey.

Gardens by the Bay is an iconic urban garden in Singapore, which began construction in 2006 and officially opened to the public in 2012. The main highlights of the garden include two massive greenhouses – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, as well as a series of 50-meter-tall vertical gardens known as “Supertrees.” Although strolling in the garden is free, the hot and humid weather quickly had us drenched in sweat, forcing us to give up our original plan of walking on the OCBC Skyway. In the end, we had a simple lunch at the food court in the convention center in front of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

On the way to have breakfast, a certain someone encountered a few old friends again.

We shared a breakfast at a cost of 39 Singapore dollars! That could buy a sumptuous dinner in Penang.

After entering a narrow underground passage on the left and opening a door, suddenly, the spacious passageway on the right appeared before our eyes.

In front of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel is the convention center. The circular floor features a rolling animation that looks quite dizzying.

- The Helix Bridge, opened in 2010, was inspired by the structure of human DNA, symbolizing life and rebirth. It reflects Singapore’s urban spirit of continuous progress and innovation.

While in Penang, we booked the tickets for the observation deck at the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for 6 p.m. tonight. We were lucky enough to snag the last two tickets that included champagne and chocolate for watching the sunset. But predictably, yet somewhat expectedly, around 5 p.m., the sky started thundering and lightning. Just as we got into a Grab to head to the SkyPark, heavy rain began pouring down. Upon arriving, the staff informed us that due to the lightning, the observation deck was temporarily closed. However, they not only fully refunded the ticket, but also gave us two free tickets with no time restrictions, which was another unexpected surprise. So we will try again tomorrow, this time for free!

After dinner, we went to watch the light and sound show at Gardens by the Bay. The Supertrees put on a spectacular performance with colorful lights and popular songs of yesteryear, and the whole show was very much worth experiencing. The Supertrees at night are even more enchanting than during the day, displaying a different kind of spectacular charm.

Today, we walked nearly 23,000 steps, in the hot and humid Singapore weather. We can give ourselves a little red flower. It was after 10 p.m. when we returned to the hotel and could finally say good night.

  1. I’m glad you found the underground passage, are they not well publicized? I don’t think I would do well in hot and humid weather, I’m sure I would opt to stay home!
The Supertrees look beautiful and interesting. I’m hoping all goes well tomorrow for a chance to see the sky park.

  2. I don’t see my comment on Gardens by the Bay so I’ll try again.
