In August of 1949 my father borrowed a car from a Philippe Gutzwiller’s father and he and Philippe and Dick Woods spent two days driving through some of the Cathedral towns north of Paris. These pictures show the cathedrals as they were in 1949, some still suffering major damage from WWII. Below are some of his pictures and postcards from that trip.

Dearest Mother & Jack,
This is a not too good view of the cathedral here that was almost completely destroyed 1914-18 – It has been beautifully reconstructed though and is now as good as new. The inside is gorgeous. We are on a drive through the cathedral towns of North France.

Dearest Mother & Jack, Sameday! We have just been through the cathedral which also was completely reconstructed! Have you ever been here Jack? The inside of the church is the most beautiful we have seen yet. We move on now to Laon to spend the night – we are driving in Phillip’s family’s car. All for now – Love Desmond
