Guest Post – Part II: My First Overseas Travel – Penang, Malaysia

March 23, 2024

第一站,The Top。

After breakfast, I went downstairs and tried to withdraw money from an ATM, which was very convenient (I learned a new skill). Let’s go!

The first stop, The Top.

James is indeed a travel expert. He bought tickets online and led us to the highest point in Penang, The Top. This outstanding building is 68 stories and 251 meters high. Today we are going to challenge the Rainbow Skywalk. People are strange sometimes. When rationality tells us it’s safe, our eyes still involuntarily feel afraid when we see the heights below the glass. James is the bravest, while JoAnne is a little more timid. Under the scorching sun, it wasn’t long before we bravely stood on the glass sky observation deck. Overlooking the entire George Town and the surrounding mountains and beaches, how broad-minded and spectacular the scenery is! Of course, this is the first time I’ve stood in such a high place!

This is the entrance, a very unique design.
The wax figures along the way are very lifelike.
Does it look thrilling?
The view of a part of the scenery from the observation deck.

The second stop, New World Food Center for lunch. We walked here to have lunch. Various delicious food stalls dazzled our eyes and made our mouths water. JoAnne chose a few dishes, which were quite tasty and had flavors I had never tried before.

Laksa
Japanese teppanyaki pork rice, quite delicious.
Wat char hor fun (a type of flat rice noodle dish), quite delicious.
Ice kacang, delicious and inexpensive!

第三站,Tropical Fruit Farm 热带水果农场 – The third stop, Tropical Fruit Farm

After having lunch and resting for a while, we took a taxi and drove along the winding coastline for an hour to arrive here. The driver was a bit rough, and JoAnne and I both felt a little carsick when we arrived. The tour guide drove a sightseeing car, bringing the three of us up the mountain in the cool breeze.

There were many tropical fruits here that I had never seen before, let alone tasted. The female tour guide spoke fluent Chinese and English. She explained while picking fruits for us to taste. These organic fruits, some local and some from abroad, were a real feast for our taste buds! The tropical fruits were very special and tasted great, with a rich and varied mouthfeel that is hard to express in words. I can only say that we encountered delicious flavors beyond our cognitive scope! The discomfort from carsickness was completely gone, making this trip so worthwhile! Perhaps this encounter with certain tropical fruit plants is the only chance in my lifetime.

Here are a few interesting fruits to record:

- This is a pineapple plant. Each plant only produces one pineapple, and it only grows once a year.
These are immature longan fruits.
- This is a rose apple, and it indeed has a hint of rose fragrance.

This is a chestnut.

This is the Magic Fruit. After peeling and holding the fruit in your mouth for one minute, any sour food you eat will then turn sweet. That’s how magical it is!

- What is peeled directly from the tree is cinnamon, which is used as a spice and can be used for cooking meat.
- This is a dragon fruit. The flower it blooms is also called the “king flower.” When the flower falls, the fruit forms.

This is an apple with a layer of fuzz on the surface.

- This is a green papaya. It is delicious when mixed in cold salads.
It is from the same family as the jackfruit.

- This is a coffee bean. Of course, it still needs to go through other processing steps to become the coffee we drink.

The local oranges are green, but they are very sweet and juicy inside.
Rambutan
Cannonball fruit, native to Central and South America, widely cultivated in tropical regions or greenhouses.

The fourth stop, Batu Ferringhi Beach

After resting for a bit at our accommodation, we continued our journey and arrived at the beach. Walking on the soft white sand, gazing at the rippling blue sea, and sipping on enchanting blue cocktails, it was truly intoxicating. This was my first time drinking by the sea. In this moment and setting, reuniting with my dear sister, I was overjoyed. I am so grateful for our encounter in this lifetime!

The fourth stop, Indian cuisine for dinner

Tonight, the three of us tasted Indian food at a restaurant across from the beach. Of course, this was also my first time trying Indian cuisine. It was quite a fresh experience, and the flavors were delicious. We finished everything!

This is a small stall opposite the restaurant. I really like these small lanterns. Today’s mood is also like these little lights, bright and colorful! What a fulfilling and happy day!

  1. Wei, you and Zhaoyang definitely have a strong family resemblance, beautiful!

The Rainbow Skywalk doesn’t look like a place I would want to walk on, but the Tropical Fruit farm seemed like a very worthwhile stop, what an interesting place.

I would have hated the winding coastline drive, I always get carsick.

I like your narrative descriptions,Wei, you and your sister make me want to experience the trip with you.

I’m very happy that you have had such a wonderful visit with your sister.
