Gaudi Buildings

Thursday, May 26, 2022. Day 38 of the trip.

Today was a day to pay tribute to the famous Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí, who built many of the iconic buildings in Barcelona. We left our Apartment and walked a path to the Sagrada Familia passing by several other Gaudí buildings.

The first building we passed was the Casa Batlló Apartments, built in 1877. The building was renovated by Gaudí and expanded into the world heritage site in 2005. This apartment perfectly expresses Gaudí’s design features – curved and stained glass mosaics.
The second building was the Casa Mila, built between 1906 and 1912 and added to the World Heritage List in 1984 – again with curves and strange decorative designs.

Of course the highlight of today was the Sagrada Familia. This majestic, imaginative, bizarre, and beautiful church is beyond words to describe. It is the most unique and beautiful church we have ever seen. Founded in 1882 and continuing for five generations, the Sagrada Familia was built by Gaudí for more than 40 years, and by many other famous architects, not to mention the donations and efforts of thousands of people around the world. Gaudí’s masterpiece became a reality and is still under construction today.

Our tickets were for 1:30 pm and so we had lunch at a nearby restaurant.

My fried noodles
PJG’s Chicken Teriyaki and Rice
After lunch, we passed by a group of locals playing cards.
The Nativity facade of the Sagrada Familia.
Marvel at the rich sculpture and botanical patterns of this Nativity façade dedicated to the birth and early years of the life of Jesus.
The Passion façade of the Sagrada Familia. This façade is relatively simple in design, reflecting the crucifixion and suffering of Jesus.
The large sloping columns of the porch are designed like tensed muscles, and in the designer’s own words, the façade should, “be hard, bare, as if made of bones.”
Scenes from the Crucifixion

This model shows what the Sagrada Familia will look like when it is fully completed. The grey part is completed and the yellow part shows the yet to be completed parts.

Tickets for the Sagrada Familia are 26 euros each. Upon entering the church you are completely overwhelmed by Gaudí’s designs. The combination of stained glass and sunlight is the most alluring part to me. In typical churches there are chapels and various statues, but the Sagrada Familia puts all of that design on the outside. Its interior is just the space itself, where the exterior facades have told the story of the life of Jesus. The architect imagined the interior as a giant forest, with the pillars designed like trees with branches, and a large open space that invites contemplation.

Looking up, the top of the stone pillar spreads out like a tree branch and reaches the roof, which not only achieves the architect’s aesthetic intention of integrating nature, but also has a more practical role of supporting the immense structure.
Beautifully colorful stained glass that changes with the sunlight.
The perfect combination of light and shadow from the stained glass – the design on the Nativity side is cold light.

The Passion Facade is designed with warm light – like a sunset.

There are too many details and all kinds of whimsy in the Sagrada Familia, it is difficult to fully express with the camera of a mobile phone, and there are too many tourists, so it is difficult to take photos from a good angle without being disturbed. The Sagrada Familia was originally planned to be completed in 2026, but because of Covid, a new completion date has not yet been announced. We hope to visit the completed Sagrada Familia again in my lifetime.

We found a Spanish restaurant near the B&B for dinner.
Free olives. Previously I have never liked olives much, but I am slowly being accustomed to their pickled flavor. Tonight I ate two whole olives for the first time in my life.
Tomato and garlic bread.
Fried calamari, way too greasy.
The famous Seafood Paella to share.

We spent more than 4 hours on our feet today viewing the buildings and the church, and we’re tired. I hope I can return to that magical forest in my dreams tonight, without the interruptions of tourists, so I can meditate alone.

  1. I like the interior of the church but the outside is a little gaudy, although I can see a lot of workmanship went into building it.
