II Chasing Memories II

Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Today is a painful and happy day to relive memories. The pain is my pain, because I am riding in a car on a winding mountain road.

Fortunately, after so many years of torture, I’ve gotten used to the carsickness; the pain is also PJG’s pain, because the search for the third location failed, haha. Happiness is the happiness of both of us, because today we still managed to catch up with some of PJG’s memories of more than 50 years ago and see some awesome scenery as well!

We woke up to this beautiful sunrise.

Photo taken by PJG’s father in 1967, maybe it was the raised rock that piqued his interest?
In today’s photo, notice the rock bump on the mountain in the background, the same as in the 1967 photo.

Today he seems very calm, the tide is higher than the sea 50 years ago, so the rock near the unique big rock in the photo above is barely visible.

The next destination is the Kaiser Observatory on the top of Pelekas Hill in central West Corfu. The observatory is named after the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Kaiser, who used to come here to enjoy the sunsets. The panoramic view of the interior of Corfu island and the Mediterranean Sea from the Kaiser Observatory is very beautiful and breathtaking. Of course PJG’s family also came here in 1967.

Many olive trees, that restaurant is new.
Corfu is literally covered in green.
Corfu old town can be seen in the background. We plan to go there tomorrow.
In 1967, PJG climbed up on the Kaiser Observatory and danced happily. The photo is not clear because it was taken from an old super-8 film.
Today he is shy and silent, haha
The scenery on the way to the second destination and the town on the hill in the distance.
Second destination: Agios Spiridon Beach
I can only praise the beautiful scenery, there are no words, haha

Today’s photo, the Paleokastritsa monastery on the hill is shaded by trees that have grown over 50 years.
Another photo from 1967.
I tried my best to take a photo with the same angle and composition.
What a beautiful view!
Today’s obligatory cat photo. A tourist brought a bag of cat food to feed them.

Originally the third destination was for us to take some photos at another monastery. PJG originally thought that the monastery in the 1967 photo was the Paleokastritsa monastery, but unfortunately after going inside we found that it was not the right monastery. So the two of us drove off down a winding road to another monastery called Mirtiotissa. The road was really difficult and dangerous, I was clutching the car hand hold! Finally, the mountain road in front of the monastery became very narrow, rugged and steep. I wonder why anyone would drive here? Well, so what happened to our “hunting photos”? Got any photos from 1967? The results are yet to be revealed. Stay tuned.

A very unique building from a super-8 film shot by PJG’s father in 1967
PJG spent a lot of time researching Google Maps and confirmed that this was the location of the building. Today, we drove to this place. It turned out that the building is there but blocked by trees. I went in to the restaurant next to it and showed them the photo from 1967. They confirmed that it was indeed the building hidden in the woods, now a private residence. PJG says it was the unique modern building that must have drawn his fathers attention.
This is the steep and rugged mountain road, unfortunately the photo does not do it justice.

Is this 1969 photo the same place as the one above?
We din’t realize it but the monastery was closed for a break at that time. We wondered why it was so quiet and no one was there!

In such a quiet monastery, we suddenly heard a very loud bird call. Looking around we saw a peacock that was doing it’s mating call dance!
What a beautiful peacock

After a day of “photo hunting”, of course we ended up back at the The Village Taverna for dinner, the owner treated us like old friends and we tried a few different dishes today.

The “photo hunt” journey to relive memories will continue, and photos of the third destination will appear once we succeed! Good night!

  2. I also don’t like winding mountain roads, especially if someone drives too fast! I don’t remember Agios Gordios Beach and the Kaiser Observatory. The olive tree grove does look familiar. The photo from 1967 of Agios Spiridon Beach looks familiar, but I don’t remember being there! I love all your photos of the scenery and views. I can see why Dad and Mum loved the place. I also don’t remember all these cats everywhere, I wonder if they were present 50 years ago? The wall of the Mirtiotissa Monastery is very pretty, Dad would have taken a photo of it if it had been there then. The buildings look the same so it must be the same monastery. I remember having smelt for breakfast more than once. I remember Mother being pleased that we liked it.
