Our Last Day In Corfu

Friday, May 6, 2022. Day 18 of the trip, day 7 in Corfu.

Time flies, the last day in Corfu has already arrived! The weather is gloomy today, we planned to spend this last day relaxing at the hotel, but we still couldn’t resist the temptation to explore Corfu one last time.

At the southernmost point of the island you will find Kavos. We thought we’d try our luck and try to find the location of a photo from 1967. It turned out that when we went there, we found that it would take a miracle to find the house in the old photo. After strolling around the town of Kavos for a while, there are many small shops, restaurants, etc. in the town, but because it is not the peak tourist season, almost none of them were open.

By the way, PJG is really a very tolerable person. The backs of his two heels have been blistered and bleeding from his shoes these last few weeks and he has been putting band-aids on them to ease the pain. I became surprised, as he’s been wearing the same shoes at home for a while, and he walks every day when he’s at home without a problem – why did he suddenly have trouble with his feet? So, just now, I looked at his shoes and found that the plastic inside the shoe on his heel was cracked, and both shoes had a sharp point on the plastic that was digging into his heel! How could he last so long? Is this one of the characteristics of successful people? Or just stupidity?

A very artistic corner of the hotel
The 1967 photo, we have to admit, finding this house would have been a miracle. There’s really nothing to go on.
Kavos小镇. The Kavos town
Kavos海滩. The Kavos Beach
The Kavos beach looks very unattractive because it’s been ruined by the wheels of ATVs. Many of small shops on the island rent out ATVs and tourists (or locals) come here to destroy the beaches. This was not the only beach we saw like this.
This is the all-terrain vehicle (ATV)
Being the off season I guess no one bothers to maintain the area.
Tried to find the house in the old photo but nothing really matches.

The drive to and from Kavos was very easy. Unlike the mountain roads, the road to the south of the island is relatively flat and wide.

After returning to the hotel, we started packing our luggage again and preparing for tomorrow’s 9am flight. So here I will share some photos I took when we went to the old town of Corfu a few days ago.

The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, once a palace and now the Museum of Asian Art, with a statue of Sir Frederick Adam in the center.
Pedestrian street at the western edge of The Liston Plaza Spinada
Metropolitan Church of the Virgin Mary Spilaiotissa, Saint Blaise and Saint Theodora Augusta (Whew! Some name!)
A small store selling refrigerator magnets made of stones. If I didn’t have to travel, I would definitely buy some.
The arch way of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George
The statue of the youngest son of the Durrell family in Pianazza Square. I’m not sure why everyone likes to touch his nose?

The following map highlights the different places we drove to in Corfu over the past seven days. We only missed the northern-most part of the island, but maybe there will be another time.

For the last meal, the two of us went to a different restaurant for the first time this week. We found a little restaurant with a few tables of customers in Messonghi Beach, which is only a five minute drive from the hotel. What was the result? Read on.

Romeo. The restaurant is called Romeo
The appetizer platter. We expected dips with pita bread … I didn’t expect a plate of fried meatballs and so on. Yes, just imagine what it looks like, haha
My seafood pasta. Old fish.
Today’s Cat Photo: This lucky guy is standing next to me getting to eat a lot of those meatballs and seafood.

Needless-to-say, the restaurant turned out to be really bad, so bad that I forgot to take pictures of PJG’s dish. After eating this meal, I found that I didn’t regret going to The Village Taverna every day for six days after all!

We spent the rich seven days in Corfu quickly, and revisiting the 1967 memories also left us many good memories in their place.

  1. That house in 1967 looks like a restaurant. Perhaps we ate there.
The old town of Corfu looks very inviting. I’m sure we went there in 1967 but took no photos!
I like that artistic corner of the hotel photos that you took, lovely enough to frame for your home.
James must have lost sensation in his heels because I would have been touching and searching for why my heels hurt and it would have been fixed with moleskin (heels) and duct tape (shoes).

Have fun in Athens, I see you are already there now!
