Following his transatlantic trip on the SS Washington, ADR stayed a few days in London to visit with his sister who had arrived a month earlier. He left for Zurich and arrived Saturday morning having coffee by Lake Zurich. He only stayed one night and then took the 10am train through the rolling Tyrollean Alps to Innsbruck, a town in the state of Tyrol, Austria arriving at about 6:30pm. It was raining as he made his way to the Hotel Europa. The next morning he toured through Hofkirche and the Castle of Maria Theresa.
On Tuesday he met Esta and Francis, who would travel with the group for a few weeks. They took a trip up the mountain on the Funicular where ADR had this photograph taken (actually the exact location has not yet been identified).
From ADR on 26-Jul-1949: “Went to Schoenbrunn castle (beautiful) fountains, statues, gardens, etc – Went through castle (Saw 45 rooms) magnificent – saw coaches – to bed early.”
