Day Two in Tokyo

May 28, 2023, Sunday – Tokyo Trip Day 2

Our breakfast was egg salad and fried chicken sandwiches that we bought at the 7-11 store downstairs last night. It is convenient and delicious, and it is indeed an upgrade from the simple croissants for breakfast as had while traveling in Europe, haha.

After breakfast, we walked around the near the hotel, planning to buy some supplies, but after 9:00 in the morning, most places were still closed. The area we are staying in is Shinjuku, the busy heart of Tokyo, a frantic and vibrant place and walking through the streets is like enjoying a gorgeous fireworks show, even in the daytime, you can feel the splendor of the fireworks.

We did a 45 minute walk to the Takeshita Pedestrian Street. This is a short pedestrian street with many small shops selling trendy clothes, accessories and gadgets. Of course, there were a lot of people here.

Someone had a deep conversation with this little robot, he said what is your name, and the robot repeatedly said, “sorry, I missed your speech, can you repeat again.” lol.
It is a 6-minute walk to the Tokyo Plaza Omotesando Harajuku, with the entrance facade to the shopping mall, called the mirror wall, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.
PJG?Very magical mirror wall, how many PJGs can you find?

We had lunch at a ramen shop nearby, which I found on YouTube. The taste was really good, with a very rich broth. After eating a bowl, all we wanted to do was to go back to hotel and sleep, satisfied, haha – we did not.

The restaurant is called Kyushu Jangara Ramen Harajuku
The seats are placed around the bar, and each seat is separated by a privacy screen.
I ordered 3A, the name is too difficult to remember, I only remember the number, haha, the noodle shop is very considerate to provide each customer with a pitcher of iced water.

The next stop is to go to the famous Shibuya crossing, a famous landmark in Tokyo, which is regarded as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Whenever the signal lights are red, the pedestrians from different directions build up at the intersection, forming a spectacular scene. When the signal light turns green, thousands of people quickly weave through, like a school of fish dancing in the sea. According to statistics from 2016, when there is a lot of traffic, about 3,000 people pass through this intersection within one light sequence (about 2 minutes). The two of us went to the Magnet by SHIBUYA 109. The 7th floor of this mall overlooks the Shibuya intersection for great views.

Many tourists are like us, looking for a place that is very suitable for overlooking the crossing, because this is really a unique view, a place that reflects Tokyo’s fast-paced and unique culture, watching every two minutes of stillness and activity, it is like Touching the Pulse of the city of Tokyo.
If you look closely, you can see PJG standing in the rush of people

We just happened to be here for the Shibuya Kagoshima Ohara Matsuri show held here, which is a big celebration. Celebrating the friendly relationship between Kagoshima Prefecture and Shibuya Ward, various teams from Kagoshima perform the Kagoshima Dance, dancers in traditional costumes jump and turn, accompanied by cheerful drums and musical instruments, said to be Showcasing the unique atmosphere of Kagoshima.

For dinner, We once again felt the strong nostalgic atmosphere in the old alleys, this one called Omoide Yokocho, translated to “Memory Alley” not far from the hotel. Walking through Memory Alley, surrounded by old wooden buildings and narrow streets, the dim lights illuminate the alley, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere, filled with the aroma of barbecued fried meats and fish – we salivate involuntarily as we walk through.

It was more convenient to take the subway back to the hotel from Shibuya. Rather than the hour walk it took to get there. We bought a subway card directly through the app of the Apple Wallet. Super easy!
We went to this bar, called Old-Cafe, for a beer before dinner.

Sitting with strangers, talking about life, it is really a good place to relax and communicate.
We found a small restaurant that wasn’t too busy. Eating kebabs and drinking beer is a perfect match. Each bar was a tight fit.
Our chicken, pork, pork liver, pork tongue, chicken skin, mushrooms, peppers, etc. are all roasting, wafting a tempting aroma.

After eating the first round, we were lucky enough to find a place with outdoor seating which was mor comfortable. We quickly sat down and wanted to try some other meat skewers. Unfortunately, this shop is mostly full of beef tongue skewers, and the price is higher than the previous one. Twice as expensive. So we just ordered two glasses of beer and the combination beef skewers, and then left

The famous Kabukicho street
There are many nightclubs, bars, “girl bars”, etc, here.

The first full day in Tokyo passed quickly, and it was difficult to capture the magical feeling of Shinjuku with a camera. The alleys between the high-rise buildings are filled with the original atmosphere of life, which is really dreamy. Good night, from the city that never sleeps.
