March 2 and March 3, Saturday and Sunday
After immersing ourselves in the simplicity of Chew Jetty, we returned to our comfortable and cool home for a brief rest. We then took a Grab to another distinctive attraction in Penang — the Penang Floating Mosque. Named for its construction on stilts over the water, this mosque is one of the most unique religious buildings in Malaysia and even Southeast Asia, appearing to float on the sea at high tide.
Visitors are allowed to enter for a visit. After registering our names, the gatekeeper asked us to wear traditional Muslim robes — I needed to wear one because I am a woman and had to cover my hair, while PJG needed to cover his lower body because he was wearing shorts. This was our first time entering a Muslim mosque, where a few male worshippers were praying. Women are not allowed to pray here, and I could enter perhaps because I am a tourist.
After leaving the Floating Mosque, we took a Grab to another beautiful spot in Penang — Batu Ferringhi Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Penang. Several restaurants along the coastline place their seats directly on the soft sand, creating a rare beach dining experience. This was indeed our first time enjoying a drink and watching the sunset right on the beach, surrounded by a continuous stream of people, enthusiasts of parasailing cutting across the sky, and vendors leading horses back and forth, making the evening seem so perfect. Moments like these seem to capture the essence of how we imagined our trip to Malaysia.
Just as the sun began to set below the mountain, the sky began to turn very dark, and the sound of thunder roared in the distance, portending the arrival of a downpour. When we felt the first drops of rain, we immediately headed back into the restaurant just in time for an intense downpour. This sudden heavy rain added to this unexpectedly perfect experience.
On Sunday, we walked for 40 minutes to a market in the morning, where we bought some vegetables, fruits, pork, and four chicken legs, planning to cook dinner at home on Sunday night. Today’s temperature was 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with 85% humidity, making it feel like 101 degrees Fahrenheit! In the afternoon, we took a Grab to the Penang Botanical Gardens. To our surpise, we saw a lot of macaques! It was truly a trip worth making.
Today undoubtedly became the most fulfilling and joyful day for me and PJG since we arrived in George Town, especially when we sat on the soft sand, enjoying the sunset. In the botanical garden, those macaques, engrossed in savoring flowers and oblivious to the people around them, added a unique touch to our weekend. At that moment, the endless charm of nature and the natural coexistence of equality among all beings deeply impressed upon us the beauty of harmonious coexistence.
What a unique experience to see inside a Muslim Mosque. In the 5 years we lived in Iran, we were never to even entertain the thought of a visit!
I love the photo of your selfie at the beach restaurant, And your description of eating inside with the rain pouring down.
What a wonderful time you had at the Penang Botanical Gardens.
