Today is the last day that we will be driving in England, and this morning we went first to Stonehenge. It’s about an hours drive from the only actual hotel accommodation on our entire trip. PJG had been to Stonehenge before, once as a young boy and then again in 2002. Stonehenge is in the UK and is also one of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world. Its construction and ultimate purpose are still a puzzling mystery.
As we approached the destination, we could see Stonehenge very clearly from the motorway. It’s really spectacular. At the ticket office, we see that for two people it is 40 pounds, really way too expensive! Seems crazy to spend that much money and still be nearly a hundred meters from it!? No wonder many people on the internet say they you really do not need to pay for the tickets to see it. So we decided not to pay to go in, haha 😂😂😂😄😄 and instead we drove by again more slowly. I took the above photo and the photos below while driving. The photo makes it seem relatively small because the camera is a wide angle lens, but in fact, you are very close. Another option we didn’t take is to park the car in the parking lot where the tickets are sold (parking is free), and then walk along the A303, where you can get to a point to view Stonehenge (but still almost as close). In the past, James on their trips were able to walk up and touch Stonehenge when they were here many years ago, but now there’s a fence so you can’t get close even if you buy tickets.
The second stop was to George’s Hotel in Amesbury, in Exeter. Based on his father’s photos and descriptions we speculated that his father stayed here when he was traveling to Cornwall in 1949. According to the hotel staff, the house has a history of more than more than 700 years!
Finally we returned the car to the Gatwick Airport and took the intercity train into London. The train ticket is really not cheap, 17 pounds a piece! It probably took less than 40 minutes to get to the place where PJG bought a six day pass travel pass for London. After we picked up the pass we walked about 10 minutes to our Airbnb. This little more than 10-minute walk really made me feel like we’re in London. This is really a city of the world, not only modern, but you can see people from so many different countries, and there are so many styles of classical architecture – it really expresses the British feelings of the country. These well-preserved buildings, although very old, still have people living and working in them, and are a part of people’s lives – n.b. not just tourist attractions. Here are some photos of the buildings, shops and pubs that I took while walking. We will stay in London for seven days and I am hoping to gain a better understanding of London by the time we leave!
