Valletta

Friday, May 13, 2022. Day 25 of the trip.

When you visit Malta, the first place to tour is its capital, Valletta. Because it is a unique city it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1980.

From the UNESCO website:

"The capital of Malta is inextricably linked to the history of the military and charitable Order of St John of Jerusalem. It was ruled successively by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and the Order of the Knights of St John. Valletta’s 320 monuments, all within an area of 55 ha, make it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world."

In the morning, we bought a transportation card at the bus station near the hotel. The 15 euros card gives you 12 trips saving 3 euros, more importantly, it is much easier to board the bus using the card. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Valletta from St Julian. Walking into the walled city capital of only 0.60 sq km from the city gate of Valletta, I was immediately attracted by the unique buildings. Walking through the alleys, I was completely lost in the baroque style, and the limestone light khaki colored buildings. The buildings are a dense clusters of rows of unique balconies, majestic churches, and small shops with interesting designs. Every time I turned my head I was afraid of missing some picturesque scenery.

The Valletta City Gate, now the fifth gate on the site, was built between 2011 and 2014 and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The Maltese Parliament Building and the stairs next to it, many famous Instagram photos are taken here.
The Church of Our Lady of Victory, formerly known as the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot, was the first church built in Valletta.
Auberge de Castille, now a hotel.
St. John’s Cathedral is one of several Roman Catholic cathedrals in Malta and one of the landmarks of the capital. It was built by the Knights of Malta from 1573 to 1578.

The scenery seen in the Upper Barakah Garden – three cities, every day at exactly noon, a single cannon is fired. This cannon salute actually has a long history.

Maltese balconies are the most important part of this unique landscape. They are called “galleries” by the Maltese. Maltese houses have had balconies for hundreds of years. Different forms, materials, colors and decorative patterns define the Maltese character. There is a lot of interesting background to these balconies, and those who are interested may wish to search for themselves.
At the bottom of many balconies, there are special stone brackets with exquisite carvings. It is said that these stone brackets not only provide support, but also endow them with the function of “exorcism” (To rid bad spirits)
The corners of Valletta buildings are adorned with sculptures, and a regulation called “the capitoli” issued by the Knights in 1566 required owners of corner properties to provide corner decorations. This also forms another unique characteristic of the streets of Malta.

After walking under the hot sun, dodging from shade to shade for more than four hours, we were finally repelled by the melting sun. We took the ferry across the bay to Sliema, which is one of the best places to view the skyline of Valletta. The ferry ticket costs 1.5 euros, and takes about 7 minutes from Valletta to Sliema. After we got to Sliema and took a few photos, we were too tired to do much else, so we took the bus back to the hotel to rest.

The ferry
The skyline of Valletta as seen from the ferry, the huge dome is St. Paul’s Cathedral. In fact, when you are in the street, you can only see parts of the huge dome from a few locations. The whole bell tower next to it is covered by scaffolding while they do repairs.

After we arrived back at the hotel we discovered that part of the Special Olympics was being held in Malta and there were hundreds of the various groups staying at the hotel along with news crews and various dignitaries.

This photo was actually taken at breakfast as I wrote the blog.
We found a Maltese restaurant near the hotel for dinner.
Complimentary appetizer …
PJG’s goat cheese tortellini, the tortellini was too thick.
I ordered the pan fried rabbit, one of the famous dishes here … haha, I finally got my rabbit dish!

Today was tiring, hot but rewarding. Although I have only seen a small portion of this small capital city, I am already conquered by its uniqueness.

That’s it for today, good night.

  2. I love the old buildings, your photos show a wonderful city. Maybe a place for me and Bob to visit. The crowds without masks are too much in some places.
