Lisbon as the legend has it, like Rome, was born on seven hills. The Lisbon earthquake and fires of 1755 destroyed many of the city’s buildings. We found that the city of today is indeed built on seven hills and we climbed a few of them today.
After the disaster with the B&B washer/dryer, producing extremely wrinkled clothes, I spent an hour ironing before heading out in the morning!
Our first stop was to take the Santa Justa elevator to the Bairro Alto area on the hillside. When we got there, we found a huge line of people waiting for the elevator, so we hiked up the hillside instead. I mean, it’s Justa elevator.

It was a very pleasant first full day in Lisbon. Although we climbed only two of the seven small hills, unlike Malta, it was easy to walk around in the shade of the beautiful alleys. Before we came here, I didn’t really know much about Portugal. After the capital Lisbon’s various cultural baptisms, the major earthquake, fires and tsunamis, Lisbon is truly a city with unique appeal. After our first day, I now feel that Lisbon is a very peaceful and colorful city, with unique churches, castles, alleys, and buildings similar to other European cities. The people here are friendly and the beer and food are reasonably priced, so far, I am in love with Lisbon.
Because James made a pun I looked up the translation for that paragraph and see there is no pun in Mandarin!
The red statue seems out of place.
Hahaha, I like your captions about James.
That elevator must have been very novel in 1900, the inventor must have had a store in the Bairro Alto area and was concerned that the hill was keeping people away from shopping!
I like the interesting way the store displayed canned fish.
I always wanted to visit Lisbon– Now I am!
这一篇照片挺多,可以好好看看里斯本的样子。也是一座独特的老城。老建筑我挺喜欢,那么多线条、花纹很美,现代人工具也多忙忙碌碌反而出不来那么多精美细腻的作品。
