Today was the only full day in Marseille and we visited two iconic sites. The first is a majestic building – the Palais Longchamp. It was built in 1862 to celebrate the arrival of the waters of the Durance River to the city of Marseille through the Marseille Canal.
The central part of the building expresses the glory of the Durance water, marked by a young woman in the middle, her companions symbolizing fertility: wheat and vines. Behind her, chubby children carry a bundle of wheat and a bunch of grapes. The very rich decoration of the building is a metaphor for the abundance and fertility brought by the waters of the canal. To travel in Europe means that you regularly see majestic or beautiful or romantic buildings displaying the sense of its rich history.
After lunch, we went to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Guardian, located on the hill “Garde”. We gave up the idea of climbing the mountain on foot. This time, we took this sightseeing “silly train”, 9 euros per person, to the top of the mountain. Along the way, we also saw places that we wouldn’t have seen on foot. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Guardian, a gorgeous neo-Byzantine Roman Catholic church, is a pilgrimage site for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary every August 15th, commonly known by local residents as “la bonne mère” (meaning “good mother”). The Garde hill on which it is located has had three purposes since the 15th century: a lookout post, a military building and a place of worship and pilgrimage. The first stone guarding the Basilica of Notre-Dame was laid in 1853. The top of the hill has a 360-degree view of the city of Marseille The scenery is a must-see for tourists and gives a more peaceful perspective to an otherwise bustling city.
Before coming to Marseille, a lot of people said that this is a rough industrial city, without the atmosphere of other southern French cities, and also there are many thieves here. When we were in Nice, the owner of a restaurant also told us to be careful of thieves. One of his customers was pick-pocketed in one day in Marseille. Therefore, we also come here prepared to be diligent and staying aware of our surroundings. Although it is not as serious as others describe, Marseille is indeed a place where many cultures and races gather. Perhaps the prejudice against some races formed by the people themselves has created a sense of insecurity. , I admit mine did too. But overall, I think it is still an interesting city to visit, especially when your flight connection leaves from here.
We’re heading to Corfu, Greece tomorrow. We hadn’t expected to return to Greece so soon in 6 months – I’m very excited. I fell in love with it after we went there for the first time in October last year. I look forward to watching the seascape on the island and having a relaxing time.
I just found this post. Bob says he saw it but I obviously missed it with all my posts being denied a comment!!! I like the giraffe statue it seems out of place. The inside of the church is very beautiful. I’m thinking I must have visited Marseille with Miss Halabi and Sherri but I don’t remember it. I don’t like crowds so I would have felt uneasy in that street near your hotel. Too many bad memories of men grabbing me in the streets on our travels!
