Heading to Marseille

After finishing our wonderful trip in Nice, we took the train to Marseille today, a short stopover on our way to Corfu. The train journey took 2 hours and 40 minutes.

I have to say that this train is really enjoyable. There are few people in our carriage, the seats are very comfortable, the scenery along the way is beautiful and being able to eat snacks on the train reminded me of the simplest joys of riding a train as a child in China. The only annoying part was having the conductors come over to tell us to wear our masks – except that we are eating!

We brought a picnic of sandwiches and fruit for lunch – that huge tube of mayonnaise was only 0.75 euros

The 2+ hour trip passed quickly. When we arrived in Marseille, we immediately felt the difference from Nice – a big sprawling city. According to Wiki, in terms of population in 2019, Marseille ranked second only to Paris. Walking on the streets, we immediately felt the feeling of a big city, the bustling crowd, the streets full of traffic. The area where our hotel is located is near the Port and there are many immigrants from Africa, Lebanon and the Middle East here. There were also many homeless people here, as well as women seeming to use their children to gain sympathy for some change.

  2. I like the look of the Mercure Hotel, very pretty iron work railings.
With all the bustling crowds of Marseilles you have been fortunate to find places to eat that are not crowded.
