A Rainy Day

Friday, June 2, 2023, Day 7 of the Tokyo trip

We woke this morning to the sound of heavy rain outside. After referring to the weather forecast, it seems that the rain will last all day. We changed our plans and decided to find an art gallery that has available tickets. But I was surprised to find that many of the art museums in Tokyo are so popular.

The tickets for the Ghibli, Yayoi Kusama, and the Hayao Miyazaki animation Museums, which we had planned to go to, were completely sold out; so we had to choose the less popular Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art.

- We took the subway to the Tokyo Station. This huge underground world beneath the station is really crowded.
There is a famous indoor “ramen street” here, and we both ate ramen for lunch.
I really don’t like to queue up for something to eat – I feel that there is basically no food that is worth standing in line for a long time for. We found a fairly short queue.
A typical ramen restaurant setup

My miso ramen, the noodles are generally okay, the pork is very fresh, but the soup is a bit salty.
PJG的辣味增面,真的是很辣,- His spicy miso noodles are really, really spicy.

After lunch, we walked to the art museum in the rain for more than 20 minutes. Fortunately, the rain was not too heavy at the time. The National Museum of Modern Art is located in the center of Tokyo, adjacent to the Imperial Palace. It is the first national art museum in Japan. What is exhibited in the museum today are some works from the end of the 19th century to the present, running through the history of Japanese art for the last hundred years.

The Imperial Palace moat as seen from the museum
This oil painting is called, “Irises”, painted in 1918
This oil painting is called, “Woman of Izumozaki”, 1923
Oil on canvas: Five Nudes, 1923
Silk Painting: “Way Back”, 1915
美术馆买的油画: 大马士革的路, 1983年,这幅画很明显的和日本画的区别,更立体,光影感更明显 – Oil painting: “Damascus”, 1983, this painting is obviously different from Japanese paintings, it is more three-dimensional, and the sense of light and shadow is more obvious.
油画:平和的村庄,2019-20年,这幅是PJG在这个美术馆里最喜欢的 – Oil Painting: “Peaceful Village”, 2019-20, this one PJG claims is his favorite in the gallery.
我最喜欢这幅,哈哈,叫做三个兄弟- well, this one is my favorite, haha, it’s called “Three Amigos”

There are a lot of modern paintings in the art museum, which are works that seem incomprehensible, such as a bunch of colored lines, a white circle on a black background, etc. Many times when I look at modern or contemporary art, I feel that I have no ability to really appreciate them. Just like the face on the oil painting called “Untitled” which is the featured photo for this post. I always think that it is because the painter is famous that people appreciate this kind of work, but then I think about it: or is the painter famous because of his works. Does it sound like a chicken and egg?

It was still raining and we took the subway back to the hotel. It rained heavily during dinner time. We tried Japanese Sukiyaki nearby the hotel. It is similar to hot pot, but the soup base is usually miso soup (made of soy sauce, mirin and sugar, etc.).

酒店对面的kabukicho大厦里的美食街 – The food street inside the Kabukicho building opposite our hotel.
Niimura – Our Dinner restaurant, Niimura.
The waiter helps the customer get started with the Sukiyaki process.
The two of us ordered a set of Japanese Wagyu and a set of pork, which is basically a plate of meat and some vegetables, mushrooms and tofu.
Wagyu with the raw egg dip … a little gross at first.

After dinner, we went back to the Pachinko place to waste another 1,000 yen. This time PJM takes the challenge. She watched some game strategy videos on Youtube, so at least knew how to play – but regardless, the 1,000 yen disappeared in less than 5 minutes. Ha ha.

The rain is getting heavier and heavier. We’re going back to the hotel to sleep. Tomorrow is our last full day in Tokyo. Hoping for better weather tomorrow!

Good night.

  1. It was interesting to watch the Sukiyaki cooking, it does seem like the Hot Pot we had at your 60th party. The Bertinos often took me to a Japanese restaurant and I would have sukiyaki soup that the restaurant had already cooked.

Too bad the Ghibli and Miyazaki museums were sold out. I’m not fond of modern art, but I do like the colorful man’s head. It reminds me of art that Mum liked.

I hope you have a good day tomorrow.
