The Summary of The Teaser South America Trip

Day 4 after South America

My summary of this trip to South America in one sentence is that it was not unexpectedly enjoyable, meaning it was not enjoyable. In terms of the aspects that I was most concerned about:

What I liked:

  1. Inexpensive, especially in Argentina with the blue exchange rate on the black market
  2. The locals we met were very friendly
  3. Street performances in Santiago get very creative

Aspects I didn’t like:

  1. The Language barrier: For the first time, I found it very difficult to travel. The locals don’t speak any English, and I can’t read or speak any Spanish. The signs and menus don’t have English. Even simply buying a bus ticket is difficult to communicate. Sometimes, if there are no icons of men or women on the bathrooms, I don’t even know which one is the women’s bathroom! I need Google Translate to do everything, but sometimes there is no Internet, and then even Google can’t be used!
  2. The Food: At least what I saw did not have a lot of variety, nothing special except for grilled meats. I should also include food safety issues here. The food hygiene and drinking water safety issues in developing countries are always a concern. Therefore, many raw foods that are usually eaten were not even tried, which takes away part of the joy of traveling. In addition, PJG got travelers diarrhea, likely because of eating something unhygienic or not fully cooked.
  3. The Security issues: Many people say to be careful for your personal safety here. When in Santiago, the waiters in the restaurant always reminded you to look after your mobile phone, tie your purse or bag to the chair, etc., and in Buenos Aires, it was similar. Although we didn’t encounter any problems, both of us are always careful, which greatly reduces the travel experience. I have never felt the need to be so careful when traveling in Europe or living in the United States. If I forgot my bag or phone at a restaurant in the United States, it would likely be turned in and not stolen.

So, the above is my summary. I think this first teaser trip may be our last trip to South America. When I have time to travel in the future, I will definitely choose Asia, Europe or maybe Australia; places where I haven’t been to yet.

A summary by PJG ….

Traveling is almost always fun especially when traveling with PJM! We always have a great time exploring the cities and seeing the sights. South America was always on our list of places to go because it is a new continent to explore and has a lot of history. We had a relatively short time in South America, mostly due to ZY’s work situation – at first it was because she had to go to a training, then it was because she was starting a new job! Anyway, we had 18 days to explore and concentrated our time in the lower cities of South America to avoid too much inter-city travel.

As ZY mentioned in a post, Valparaiso was by far the best part of the trip. This may be partly due to me becoming sick in Buenos Aires which cut our exploring time there in half. We are glad we stayed in Vina Del Mar and took day trips to Valparaiso. It is a very hilly place and we would have been confined to a small area at night due to safety concerns etc.

Our day trip to Colonia Del Sacramento in Uruguay was also very fun and we’re glad we just made it a day trip instead of our original plan to spend the night there. It’s really a pretty small town and can see the whole place in an afternoon.

Santiago was a fun place to start and end our trip and having four days there was just about right. The food was good but unremarkable which can also be said of Buenos Aires.

Will we return to South America? I will say yes, but I think we need to explore more of Asia and Europe and probable Australia before we go back. Lima, Peru and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil would be on our list for the next visit.

I will just end by saying that it is so nice to have ZY’s notes and blogs about our trips as it becomes impossible to remember all the places we went. When re-reading her detailed notes and photographs about a place, it brings the trip back to life and allows us to revisit and relive the experiences again.

Update on Dec 18, 2022: And by the way, Argentina went on to win the World Cup beating France 3-3 in penalty kicks!!

  2. Zhaoyang, at least you were able to remember things you liked, however small! It appears to me that tourists are not valued there unless they speak Spanish. And your health is a number one concern so you could not fully partake of the food experience.
I won’t plan on ever going to Mexico, Central America, or South America but I do enjoy reading your blogs.
Good thing your trip wasn’t to Peru as you might have been stuck there due to the political activity!!
James, I’m also glad that you remember the good adventures together.
Zhaoyang’s blog does help to keep track of your memories.
    I enjoy reading it!
