Athens Day 3

On a day of “not much happening”, in the morning we went to the “National Garden” which was very close to our hotel. We went through Syntagma Square and happened to catch the tail end of a small-scale changing of the guard in Athens.

The soldiers standing in front of the Greek parliament change their guards every hour, but the one at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning is more formal. Unfortunately, what we saw was at 10 o’clock and there were only two soldiers. Compared with the Buckingham Palace changing of the Guard we saw in London, this one is subdued, even comical. The two soldiers walk very purposely. They lift their feet high, and they swing back and forth. Deliberately rubbing the ground to make a squeaking rubbing sound – a very interesting changing of the guard ceremony.

(Changing of the guard – it is a pity that the we cannot upload videos to this site)
(After the change of guard, the soldiers have to stand motionless for an hour)
(Entrance to the “National Garden”)
(There are some statues in the garden, they’re all Greek to me!)
(A man selling balloons)
(A small lake in the park)
(We found a turtle lake with many turtles on the rocks)

The next destination is the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Athens Stadium. It is a horseshoe-shaped stadium and was used for the first Olympic Games in 1896. Although tickets are only 5 euros per person you could see it from the outside and there is really no reason to go in.

(Behind the flag is the podium, which is not visible here in the photo)

On the way to lunch, we passed by a flea market. If it weren’t for having an already full suitcase, we might have bought something. I really wanted to buy some nice plates to take home.

Yesterday, all of the restaurants began asking for proof of vaccine (apparently a new government rule due to rising cases). I heard a waiter said that Greece passed a bill yesterday, so they began to ask customers about the vaccine status and would confirm our vaccine card – the US CDC white card is fully accepted.

Last night we went to a restaurant in the Psiri district and listened to a band. PJG felt that the man with the hat looked like his father.

In the afternoon, we sat at a cafe in Plaka, drinking coffee and watching the crowd.

(We copied the Greeks who are often drinking this coffee)
