We left Paros Island yesterday and the owner of the hotel drove us to the airport (so nice!) It took 25 minutes to fly to Athens. The subway from Athens Airport to the hotel took about 50 minutes (not including the time to walk to the subway station), and the fare was 9 euros per person (buying two tickets, each person gets a discount of 1 euro! So sweet.) but compared with Copenhagen, the subway system here is not convenient at all.
The time interval between trains is really long. Copenhagen has a train every 2 minutes, but we waited more than 30 minutes for ours and there is no real-time train information on the subway.
When we arrived at the hotel, it was too early to check in, so we wandered around and got some lunch. The area where the hotel is located is called Kolonaki. It is a very lively and central place. But, I didn’t expect that I would feel like I was back in China?! There are all kinds of shops, and they are all small shops like in China, which you rarely see in the United States. Shops selling clothes, shoes, underwear, bags, lamps, various small commodities, tourist souvenirs, chocolate candies, etc., are simply overwhelming. Another unexpected realization is that there are so many restaurants and cafes here! It seems that on every corner is a restaurant and at 3-4 o’clock on a Thursday afternoon, there are many restaurants/cafes full of people mixed with tourists and locals and we can’t tell which is which. Are they eating lunch or dinner? Are they off work? What kind of life does a Greek person lead?
At dinner, I confirmed my understanding in the afternoon. The restaurants and bars were still bustling, and I couldn’t help but have the same question – what kind of life do Greek people live? ? How do I feel that this place is more Paris than Paris, France?
Today we went to the Acropolis, an ancient Greek building complex with a history of more than 2,000 years. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from our hotel to the Acropolis. Tickets cost 10 Euros per person. There are tons of tourists. Athens and Rome have a very similar feeling. These ancient buildings with thousands of years of history are located in a modern city in the 21st century. Sitting on the high acropolis, overlooking the dense urban buildings in the distance, there is a very dreamy feeling…
That’s it for today’s slow travel and now it’s time to sit down and people watch while sipping tea and coffee.
I don’t remember ever visiting shops, just many ruins. We weren’t tourists like you are, seeing how the people live. Your photos are great!
How many days did you guys stay in Athens ?
