Monday, December 2, 2024: The Fourth Day of Our Lima Journey
Today, we visited Barranco, a coastal district not far from our Airbnb in Miraflores. Known for its vibrant artistic vibe, Barranco exudes a bohemian charm.
When deciding where to stay, we had debated whether to choose an Airbnb in Barranco but ultimately settled on Miraflores. It took us about ten minutes by Uber to reach Barranco, where colorful murals adorn the walls everywhere, adding a lively and artistic energy to the area.
Of course, there’s the famous Bridge of Sighs, a wooden structure that has become an integral part of Lima’s history. Originally built in 1876 to connect the two sides of the ravine, it was inaugurated on February 14. During the War of the Pacific between Peru and Chile, the bridge was damaged by Chilean troops and later rebuilt. Initially constructed for practical purposes, it gradually earned the name “Bridge of Sighs” due to its popularity among lovers.
In 1921, the bridge was fully restored by the mayor, enabling it to survive the 1940 earthquake. Today, it measures 31 meters in length. According to tradition, if you hold your breath while crossing the bridge for the first time, your wish will come true. Naturally, we couldn’t resist trying it ourselves, walking hand in hand while holding our breath. The only problem? We completely forgot to make a wish—oops!
The Bridge of Sighs has also inspired numerous artistic creations. In 1960, Peruvian composer Chabuca Granda wrote the famous waltz El Puente de los Suspiros about this iconic landmark. Beyond its architectural charm, the bridge is celebrated for the romantic legends surrounding it, making it a source of inspiration for couples and artists alike.
For lunch, we chose a restaurant with a menu featuring pictures, which was undoubtedly helpful for someone like me who doesn’t speak Spanish. After the meal, we decided to walk back to our Airbnb along the coastline, a distance of less than three miles. The sea breeze gently brushed past us as we strolled leisurely, making the journey particularly pleasant.
For dinner, we chose a Peruvian restaurant called Punto Azul. Every time we passed by, it was always packed, a testament to its popularity. Despite not having a reservation, we were fortunate enough to snag an open table and finally got to try the much-praised cuisine.
Tonight, the fog was particularly dense. Sitting on the balcony of our Airbnb, I felt enveloped by the misty haze. I couldn’t help but wonder—does the coastal fog here linger all year round? Perhaps the sunsets in this place are destined to always wear a veil of mystery. The dreamy, shrouded nightscape before me brought a serene and enchanting close to the day.
Barranco is a pretty city with its many murals. The US is definitely missing out not having artists do murals.
The Bridge of Sighs is fun, too bad you forgot to make a wish. I think it must be because all your wishes for life are already coming true!
