Saturday, March 15, 2025 — Departing for Mazatlán
After returning from our trip to Malaysia, we really wanted to do another remote-working journey. Especially since last October, when the manager I liked left the company, I felt less attached, further strengthening my determination to achieve this goal within the year.
Considering time zone differences, we turned our eyes to Mexico. While browsing the map of Mexico and exploring countless Airbnb listings, we found an awesome seafront rental in Mazatlán. The booking was confirmed, and after getting approval, everything moved forward smoothly. Thus, our one-month remote-working plan in Mazatlán quietly became a reality.

- This short flight had an unexpected surprise—we were upgraded to first class, and the free food and drinks we great!
On March 15, 2025, just after 4 PM, we departed from San Francisco on our journey to Mazatlán. After a brief two-and-a-half-hour flight, we landed and found the airport customs nearly empty, allowing us to clear smoothly in just a few minutes— passports stamped and we were good to go! Following advice from some YouTubers, we booked a taxi at the airport taxi counter, reportedly safer than Uber. For 510 pesos ($25USD), we headed toward our destination, and after a twenty-minute ride, the air gradually filled with the salty breeze of the ocean. Our Airbnb host wasn’t in Mazatlán, but she arranged for a local person to welcome us upon arrival, even providing us a bottle of champagne!

The view from our Airbnb matched the photos exactly. Standing on the spacious balcony, we could see the entire beachfront avenue stretching before us. The night scene was charming, but we didn’t have time to linger. After quickly unpacking, we headed downstairs to find a spot for a cold beer.

Surprisingly, the bustling local eateries nearby, packed with tables spilling onto the streets, didn’t serve alcohol! We wandered along the beachfront avenue and surrounding streets for nearly an hour without finding a single place that served drinks, except for two seaside restaurants—but their live bands were deafeningly loud, making us reluctant to step inside.
In the end, we opted to buy beer from the OXXO convenience store downstairs and entertain ourselves back on our balcony. Although yet another unexpected twist awaited: the ocean breeze was really strong, and made sitting on the balcony hardly enjoyable. Eventually, we took refuge in a sheltered corner against the balcony wall, managing to pass our first night in Mazatlán protected somewhat from the wind.
Lets hope for better days to come!
Being upgraded to first class was a real treat at the start of your journey. And then being directed to get a taxi at the airport that was a reasonable price!
The windy balcony didn’t sound fun but hopefully the weather is better now and you have decided to stock up on beer so you can get a drink before you go to dinner. And a drink when you return too!
LOL we did stock up some beers😂. We were just trying to buy some on Sunday evening and the convenience store stops selling alcohol after 6pm! I never expected Mexico to have those kinds of restrictions!
