April 7–12, 2025 — Work Trip to Mazatlán, Week 4
This was a calm and uneventful week — our final one in Mazatlán. For the first time during our travels, we actually felt genuinely happy about the idea of going home. For some reason, many frigatebirds suddenly chose to circle above our apartment building this week, bringing back the joy of early-morning birdwatching.
On Friday afternoon, I decided to take a break. After wrapping up a meeting at 11 am, we headed out for lunch at Totem, a popular restaurant in the historic old town — perhaps the most satisfying meal of our entire trip.

After lunch, we strolled casually for a few hours through the historic old town and along the malecón. We also visited Mazatlán’s “Casa del Marino” — the Sailor’s House. Built in 1946, this old structure originally provided lodging and services for seafarers and carries the rich maritime heritage of this port city. After years of neglect, it was restored in 2024 and now serves as a public maritime culture and education center, especially geared toward the youth.

For dinner, we went to Topolo, a Mexican restaurant with a courtyard. It quickly became clear that nearly all the diners were white tourists — clearly a spot geared toward visitors. As for the food, it was pretty mediocre; in the end, I only finished the fruit that came as a side dish.

On Saturday morning, we took our final walk along the malecón. Along the way, we saw several pelicans up close and realized they were much larger than we had imagined — graceful and light in the air, but surprisingly massive up close. At noon, we returned to the small plaza in the heart of the old town and chose the same restaurant where we had our very first meal in Mazatlán — a fitting way to bring the trip full circle.

In the afternoon, we returned to the apartment to pack and get our luggage ready. Around 4 p.m., we ordered an Uber to the airport, but the driver messaged me saying the platform’s fare was too low and the actual cost would be 450 pesos. Since I wasn’t sure if card payment would be accepted, I canceled it. The apartment security guard then helped us get an official taxi instead — it cost 480 pesos plus a 24-peso credit card fee. We reached the airport in under 30 minutes, and to our surprise, our return flight was also upgraded to first class for free — how lucky!

The plane finally took off just before 8 p.m., and after a smooth flight of a little over two hours, we landed at SFO. For some unknown reason, it took more than 40 minutes for our luggage to finally come out. By the time we got home, it was already past 1 a.m. At last, a quiet night to sleep.

Next up is a deep discussion of all the “delicious food” we had. Lol.
