Valparaiso

Day 16 of South America Trip

Well, PJG feels much better today, but still has a lingering cough and diarrhea. Just in case, he did a quick self-test for Covid-19, and it was negative. Strange to say, we have traveled far and near, and we have been to so many places where people gather – we have never worn a mask. The virus has not disappeared, but we are still not infected. It seems that we have established a strong immunity!

Today we went to Valparaiso, a seaport city just north of Vina Del Mar. It took just 17 minutes to take the light rail from our place. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube before I went, and I knew that this is a very colorful world. Valparaiso was in fact the main reason we came to this area. Even though, seeing the colors in person, I was still stunned by the ubiquitous wall paintings here. I took a lot of photos. I plan to organize the photos after I get home and contribute a separate post to document them. For now, I will just post a few good-looking photos here, otherwise this post will be too long and it will put you to sleep.

EFE轻轨/地铁车站 – The EFE light rail/metro station
卖地铁卡的人不说英语,一个小女孩看到我俩困难地沟通,很友好地帮我俩翻译,看起来像一个高中生,英语说的很好,就是很紧张,哈哈 – The agent who sold us the subway card didn’t speak English. A young girl saw that we were struggling to communicate, and she kindly helped us translate. She looked like a high school student who spoke English very well, but was a very nervous speaker, haha
Light rail/subway station
The guy playing guitar sang on the light rail. He sang very well and added some romance to this short journey. I gave him 1,000 pesos.

Come and admire the wall paintings in Valparaíso with us:

The piano staircase
Someone feels well and strong again!
The Cafe Del Pintor where we had lunch, a really good restaurant!
My Pork Chops with mushroom sauce, surprisingly delicious!
PJG的三文鱼和古斯米,这个也很好吃 – PJG’s Salmon and couscous, this one was also delicious
I had seen a lot of people coming here for fun on YouTube, and Phil from “Somebody Feeds Phil” also came here. We searched the Internet for a long time but couldn’t find the specific address. We then saw a local tour group and asked the tour guide and he showed us the location to a place which we would have never have found on our own. I really went down the slide, there are videos to prove it, but someone didn’t want to play.
We tired of walking, so sat down at this cafe to have a cup of coffee, the scenery here is very unique!
My cappuccino
坐轻轨回到比尼亚德尔马后,我俩又做了这辆公交,车票一共是800比索,我没有零钱,给了司机5000比索,他一边开车一边给我找零钱,哈哈 – After returning to Viña del Mar by light rail, we took the local bus again. The ticket was 800 pesos in total. I didn’t have any change, so I gave the driver 5,000 pesos. He gave me change while driving very fast and recklessly, haha
After returning, we went back to our apartment to rest for a while, then went back to the Glasgow Pub to have a drink.
我的芒果Daiquiri鸡尾酒 – My Mango Daiquiri Cocktail
After the drinks, we arrived at the beach just as the sun was going down

After watching the sunset, we decided to look for a restaurant to have dinner. After walking for a while and not seeing anything good, we found that many restaurants were deserted; it was only 9pm! Suddenly, a very lively restaurant appeared, and many people were waiting in line. Of course, we had to have dinner here! While we were sitting at the bar drinking beer and waiting for a seat, two older fellows sitting next to us asked me if I was a Filipino. A little explanation: so far, our experience has been that you rarely see Asians in South America, which seems very strange. When traveling in Europe, there were many, many Asians. I didn’t get tanned this time, so how come I look like a Filipino? I told them I am Chinese. One of the elder men, Jerry, had worked in the US for many years and his daughter still lives there. He spoke English very well, but the other only knew Spanish. All in all, it was a pleasant and enjoyable conversation.

The dinner restaurant was called La Flor de Chile
We waited for a table at the bar, the two gentlemen in the upper left corner are the ones who started the conversation
牛油果和heart of palm沙拉,不知道那个palm具体是翻译成什么 – Our salad, Avocado and hearts of Palm. I have no idea what the translation for Hearts of Palm is!
– PJG’s breaded pork and mashed potatoes

Another interesting thing is that while the two of us were eating, another old man, named Karl, who was at the table next to us (in the photo below) came over and asked PJG if he was German, haha! Then he just sat down with us and chatted for a long time. At first I thought it might be some kind of scam, and immediately looked at my mobile phone and bag vigilantly, but later found out that it was not – he had just came to chat, haha! He can speak German, English, Romanian, but not Spanish. What an amazing dinner experience.

“Karl” is from Germany.

Today was undoubtably the most enjoyable day of our trip to South America, with its unique views, a delicious lunch and many interesting experiences.

  2. I must have missed this post. Much easier to navigate your posts on the desktop.
How nice that someone was able to help you translate at the subway station.
You both look like a couple of hippies!! Very nice that you were able to get someone to take this photo of you both.
I wonder who that red & white striped person is supposed to represent?
James’ salmon and couscous looked delicious.
James probably thought he would hurt himself on Phil’s slide.

You don’t find many Asians in South America because those who do go don’t give very good reviews!

What an interesting evening you had talking to others at the La Flor de Chile restaurant.
