Going to Buenos Aires

We are on the way to our next stop, Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. In the morning we took an 20 minute Uber to the airport. Customs went smoothly although it took 30 minutes. The flight to Buenos Aires took about an hour and a half. The plane was a large 787 and the seat between us was empty so I could lie down and sleep. Before I knew it, we had arrived. The customs in Buenos Aires is very thorough: you have to take photos and register your fingerprints and answer many questions, but unfortunately they don’t stamp your passport!

Leaving Santiago, many people waiting for customs.
Someone always likes to take pictures like this.
That partition on that seat in front of us separates the haves and have nots.
The Andes mountains with a lot of snow.
到了布宜诺斯艾利斯机场,准备过海关,某人总是提醒我说过海关的地方不让拍照,所以我抓紧时间进去之前拍了一张照片 – When we arrived at Buenos Aires Airport and going through customs, someone always reminded me that photos are not allowed in the customs area, so I took the time to take a photo before going in.
第一次见出机场还要这么检查行李的,我刚拍了这张照片,一个工作人员就来告诉我不让拍照片,哈哈 – This is the first time I saw that I had to check my luggage like this when I left the airport. But just as I took this photo, the staff member came and told me not to take photos, haha

The biggest problem in Buenos Aires is the problem of cash. Due to the serious inflation in Argentina, the local people like to ask for dollars, so there is a black market for the exchange of dollars (or euros): it’s called the blue exchange rate. The blue exchange rate is nearly twice as much as the exchange rate provided by the bank. For example, today, the bank exchange rate is 1 US dollar to 160 Argentine pesos, and the blue exchange rate on the black market is 1 US dollar to 290-300 Argentine pesos. The difference is very large. Huge! This means that if we go to the black market, we will get about 50% off any consumption! But there is no place in the airport to exchange money with the blue exchange rate, so the first taxi we took was converted with the bank exchange rate, so it was a waste of money. It took about 7,500 Argentine pesos from the airport to the hotel, and we arrived at our Marriot hotel in more than 40 minutes.

我俩的出租车,本来打算坐Uber,但是和圣地亚哥差不多,接客地点不明确,就坐出租车了 – Our original plan was to take Uber, but it was similar to Santiago, and the pick-up location was not clear, so we took a taxi instead.
Two horses in the hotel lobby…fancy.

Our first goal after checking in to the hotel was to change money! Before I came here, I watched a lot of Youtube videos about the process. Many people said that Florida Street is a place where the blue exchange rate is used to exchange money. There would be many people standing on the street, shouting “Cambio~ (exchanging money)”. Basically all of them are the same, find someone who makes you feel comfortable. First ask about the exchange rate, that person will usually take you to a place in an alley to exchange money, sounds unsafe at first, but after being here I feel that there is nothing unsafe about it. Florida Street happened to be very close to our hotel. After we put down our luggage we went directly to Florida Street. I didn’t realize that today, Monday, is a holiday in Argentina, and many shops are closed. Fortunately, those money changers are still there, and when we got there, we saw many people standing in various corners, shouting “Cambio~ Cambio~”, we asked a few of them about the rate and they all exchanged 1 US dollar for 298 Argentine pesos; but also we saw another “normal” currency exchange place. When we asked them we found that 1 US dollar was exchanged for 270 Argentine pesos. Although it was cheaper than the people on the street, we felt that the chance of receiving fake money would be lower. So, we finally chose to exchange 100 US dollars there. There are quite a lot of procedures, passport information, entry information and address are required, and finally we got some cash! I plan to find someone on the street to exchange at least once, to feel and record this experience, haha.

This is another street similar to Florida Street, in fact, there are many money changers on this street and others I bet.
This is the place where we ended up exchanging money.
- After returning to the hotel and settling in, We walked explored the hotel, and the scenery upstairs is quite good. Below is the Obelisco de Buenos Aires, the landmark building here, built in 1936 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires, with a height of 67.5 meters.
- The avenue in the middle is the famous 9th of July Avenue, named after the Argentine Independence Day – July 9, 1816. According to Wiki, it is the widest street in the world, and the distance between adjacent streets is about 110 meters, which is larger than Manhattan in New York.
The hotel waiter introduced us to this barbecue restaurant, which sells the famous Argentinian barbecue, just 2-3 minutes away from our hotel!
The Barbecue looks very tempting.
我俩点了一个烤肉拼盘,有鸡腿,香肠,猪排,牛肋排骨,腰子和肝,分量好大,这一盘菜4,800阿根廷比索,用我俩兑换的汇率,才大约17.77美元,简直太便宜了,好喜欢这里的物价,哈哈 – The two of us ordered a grilled meat platter, with chicken legs, sausage, pork chops, beef ribs, kidneys and liver. Yes, we really like the prices ($17 US) here, haha.
Never seen beer given such premium treatment, haha, and such a large bottle is only 1,200 Argentine Pesos ($4.44)
酒店门口就是这个共和国广场上的这个布宜诺斯艾利斯方尖碑,晚上都是阿根廷足球队的投影,明天是阿根廷队的第一场,对战沙特阿拉伯队 – At the entrance of the hotel is the Obelisk of Buenos Aires on the Plaza de la Repubblica. At night, it is the projection of the Argentine football team. Tomorrow is the first game of the Argentine team against Saudi Arabia.

The weather here is much cooler than in Santiago. Maybe because it is near the sea, and the sea breeze is relatively strong. We had to wear a jacket outside at night – I’m hoping it will stay cool.

  1. I like the colorful blue banner photo.
Another place that doesn’t stamp your passport, I wonder why some countries do and don’t.
Getting “cambio” would make me nervous, you are brave to want to try Florida St.
BuenosAires must have anticipated that they would one day be a large city when they constructed 9th of July Avenue.
The Barbecue place looks very nice but when I saw your meat platter I thought “no vegetables” ! I’m glad you also ordered a salad.

Can’t make a comment in “Drinks in Santiago” the continue reading link doesn’t work. Get error message.
