November 18th, South America trip day 2

It’s almost 9 o’clock when we woke up. At home, it’s hard to sleep past 7. PJG went down to the supermarket and bought some fresh croissants for breakfast. We plan to go to Mount San Cristobal, which is a hill in the north of Santiago, only 850 meters above sea level, but is the third highest peak here. On the top of the mountain is one of the main places of worship of the Chilean Catholic Church and a symbol of Santiago, Chile. It took more than 20 minutes to walk from the apartment to the foot of the mountain. The two of us who planned to hike up the mountain were defeated by the hot weather and instead bought two round-trip Funicular tickets.

BellaVista是圣地亚哥著名的夜生活区,很多的酒吧,也有很多的很特别的大型墙绘 – BellaVista is a famous nightlife area in Santiago, with many bars and many very special large mural.
This mural is of Venice, a place we have been.
Funicular ticket office at the foot of San Cristobal Hill.
Fortunately, the staff speaks English.
很普通的缆车,每7分钟一趟,每人每张往返车票是5,800智利比索,从山脚下到山顶大概7分钟 – A very ordinary Funicular runs every 7 minutes, and the round-trip ticket is 5,800 Chilean pesos per person (~6 bucks). It takes about 7 minutes to reach the top of the mountain.
Unfortunately, the weather is not very good today. The Andes Mountains in the distance are shrouded in hazy smog. A common problem faced by developing countries is the problem of air pollution.
Statue of the Virgin Mary on the top of the hill, many people in Chile practice Christianity.
Of course our bear came too!
The tall building behind the tree on the left is actually the tallest building in South America, which cannot be seen well from this angle.
A memorial site below the statue for people to commemorate deceased relatives and friends.
Close up with the statue of the Virgin Mary, the total height of the statue is 22 meters.
Inside the Chapel in the pedestal of the Virgin Mary.
Statue of Saint John Paul
The dead who were buried here should rest in peace in this very beautiful spot.
The place where you take the Funicular back down the mountain

After browsing the area for more than two hours, it was already past two in the afternoon, so we went down the mountain to eat. I had planned to eat a famous empanada (a baked pie) similar to street food. We walked by many restaurants, and finally just went in to one. There was no English menu again, and the waiters can’t speak English. PJG ordered the empanada, but the waiter said that they were out but had another one, pointing to the menu. PJG took a look, and it seems to mean “with French fries” in Spanish, so ok, that’s it. I ordered a hot dog that I saw was popular on the Internet. I pointed to what I thought was sparkling water on the menu translated by Google. When I said this, the waiter began babbling in Spanish and obviously couldn’t understand. PJG glanced at the menu and said it meant hot water. I didn’t believe it. Have you ever paid for hot water on the menu? She continued to try to explain and I finally animated touching the cup and acting like it was very hot. When she saw that, she seemed to have an idea, pulled her mask down, and began to perform a blowing motion, hahahaha, suddenly I died laughing, gave her a thumbs up, and she laughed too, it seems that it is really just hot water.

BellaVista区的地标性区域 – Landmark in the BellaVista District
A very old-fashioned style restaurant
我的热狗和PJG的菜,本来他以为他点是烤馅饼加薯条,没想到,就是一盘薯条,哈哈哈哈哈,笑死我了,真是欢乐的一餐 – My hot dog and PJG dishes, originally he thought he ordered an empanada with French fries, surprisingly, it was just a plate of French fries, hahahahaha, I laughed so hard, what a happy meal

After lunch, we went to the Plaza de Armas for a quick stroll. The Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago and the starting point of the city’s urban grid construction layout, which was designed in 1541. Surrounding the square are some historical buildings, including the Cathedral of Santiago, the Central Post Office Building, the Palace of the Archbishop of Santiago, and the seat of the local government of Santiago. Standing at the square has a distinct European feel.

- The monument to General Manuel Baquedano in front of the restaurant where we ate. This graffiti-covered monument looked strange, and according to an online search, was defaced and the statue torn down during the mass protests against social inequality in 2019.
This was part of Baquedano Square, now also covered in graffiti.
这个是我在网上找到的纪念碑的本来面目,我的个人观点这个纪念碑能在人们的抗议不平等的抗争中做出贡献,也算是值得了吧, – This is how the monument used to look – I found this picture on the Internet. From my personal point of view, it is worthwhile that this monument can contribute to people’s protest against inequality.

American Liberty Monument on Plaza de Armas
- Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago), built in 1748-1800, the current appearance was rebuilt in the 19th century. The predecessor of the church was destroyed by an earthquake.
- The Central Post Office Building, which used to be the seat of the Presidential Palace. The present building was built in 1881. The building is listed as a Chilean National Monument.

We went back to the hotel to rest for more than an hour, and then went back to the restaurant we were yesterday for another beer. Today is Friday, and there are a lot more people here. Unfortunately, the “garbage man and his dog” did not show up today.

PJG的啤酒,我的皮斯科芒果酸酒 – PJG’s Beer, My Pisco Mango Sour

Today for our entertainment came an imitator of Michael Jackson. His dance may not be the most accurate, but he is so interesting. He integrated the audience, passing crowd, and passing vehicles into his performance. The dance can make everyone laugh. We laughed, enjoyed it, and almost everyone happily tipped him, and I also tipped him 1,000 Chilean pesos.

He likes to stop the cars and dance in front of it
Everyone cooperates with him very much.
I was filming at the time, and he turned the camera around and danced a few times with me. Haha, he probably remembered that I gave him a tiny tip just now.
We found a more romantic place nearby for dinner.
Bruschettas – I ordered an appetizer, but didn’t expect the portion to be so big. They are empanadas, beef skewer, chicken skewer and bruschettas.
猪排骨和芝士土豆泥,这个菜非常好吃,排骨很新鲜软嫩,据服务员说这是一道典型的智利菜 – Pork ribs and cheesy mashed potatoes, this dish is very delicious, the ribs are very fresh and tender, according to the waiter, this is a typical Chilean dish.
吃完晚饭,又去了旁边小巷里的一个小酒吧坐了一会儿, 别看地方小,这里是两个酒吧,红色椅子是一家,黑色椅子是一个家 – After dinner, we went to a small bar in a side alley and sat for a while. Although the place is small, there are actually two bars here, the red chairs for one, and the black chairs for the other.
I ordered a chirimoya daiquiri – an exotic Chilean fruit.
A fountain statue on the way back to the hotel.

Chile is the longest country in the world, and it is also the southernmost country. It is said on the Internet that Chile’s education quality and standards are relatively developed, and it is generally recognized as a developed country. What’s more valuable is that Chile also has high rankings in terms of press freedom, human development index, and democratic development, which are comparable to those of southern European countries. Santiago was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1541 and named Santiago del Nuevo Extremo (“Santiago of the New Frontier”), so there are many traces of European influence. After a day of exploring, it feels like a combination of Asia and Europe, developing and developed countries. There are many small vendors selling various handicrafts and groceries, street stalls, small grocery stores, and hazy weather. Also many homeless struggling here. Well, that’s it for now.

  1. I liked the BelleVista colorful street murals. Glad to see you finally had a delicious dinner of native food. I don’t think I would have been happy on your tourist sights today (Friday). I see you have 2 posts today so I will look at the 2nd one tomorrow morning.

  3. To clarify about why I might not have liked day 2. The monuments covered in graffiti, not being able to communicate well to the restaurant staff, hiking up the mountain when it is hot, finding the view smoggy, and making all that effort to see the Virgin Mary statue.
    The Funicular looked fun!
