Soumaya Museum

November 30, 2023, Thursday, Day 7 of our Mexico City Trip

Today, our destination was the Soumaya Museum, a palace of art renowned for its unique architecture and rich collection. We originally planned to follow Google Maps and take the bus there. However, after waiting at the bus stop for over 20 minutes, the bus never showed up. So instead, we took Uber again, and after a journey of over 30 minutes, we finally arrived at the museum.

The Soumaya Museum building is an artwork in itself. Its exterior, designed by the Mexican architect Fernando Romero, features a unique wave-like shell composed of 16,000 aluminum mirror panels, making the entire building shimmer in the sunlight.

The owner of this museum is Carlos Slim Helú, a billionaire and businessman from Mexico. According to a Bloomberg Billionaires Index from November 2023, Carlos ranks 11th. He is a renowned collector, and his private collection constitutes a large part of the museum’s exhibits. The museum was established in memory of his late wife, Soumaya Domit, and is named after her. The museum is not only a reflection of Carlos Slim’s love for art but also his contribution to public cultural endeavors, as the museum is completely free of charge.

Only one is The Thinker

没想到斯利姆先生收藏了很多爱立信最早期的电话,有的是一八九几年的,在这里看到我母公司的东西还是很特别 – Mr. Slim has collected many of Ericsson’s earliest telephones, some dating back to the 1890s. Seeing items from my parent company here feels quite special.

Roman sculptures showing the damage of the ages from around 100-200 AD.

There are many school children visiting the museum today.
Works of Monet.
Works of Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Three shades by Auguste Rodin

Being able to admire these art treasures up close is truly wonderful. However, since most of the descriptions for the works are only written in Spanish, this somewhat impacted our experience. If there were multilingual explanations, our understanding and appreciation of these artworks would be deeper. Nevertheless, even with the language barrier, the charm of the art pieces themselves still made this visit a great experience.

At lunchtime, we found a Chinese fast food place in a food court at a nearby mall, but it turned out to be very unsatisfactory (inedible). After lunch, we took a bus to Chapultepec Park, a green oasis in Mexico City. By the tranquil lake, we enjoyed a moment of peace, embracing nature’s comfort and the city’s serenity. Later, on our walk back to the hotel, we stopped at a quaint café and had two cups of strong coffee. This simple pleasure became a small but certain happiness during our trip.

The food was not only cold but also tasteless and extremely hard; we left without finishing.
Today’s sunset from the hotel rooftop.
晚餐的饭店是一家海鲜tacos – The restaurant for dinner was a delicious seafood tacos place.

这几个tacos是吞拿鱼,虾和螃蟹,和鬼头刀鱼,还有PJG的吞拿鱼墨西哥玉米粉卷饼都还不错 – The tacos we had were tuna, shrimp and crab, and Mahi Mahi, as well as carnitas tuna burritos, all the dishes were quite good.

The relaxing day quietly came to an end. Under the night sky, the city lights twinkled alongside the stars, each little light seemingly narrating a small story of ordinary life, warm and real. In this simplicity, our journey today found freedom and satisfaction.

  1. Zhaoyang, I think you should write something to be published, your descriptions are so beautiful and with your excellent photographs your book could be a best seller!

James looks so slim being Mr Thinker. The museum would be a great place to visit with all the various artists.
