First Week in George Town – Part I

February 26 to March 3, Monday to Sunday

In our first week in George Town, I’ve already started to get used to the work pace here. At 6 a.m., when it’s still dark outside, my workday begins, coinciding with 3 p.m. in Boise and 4 p.m. in Plano, Texas, allowing for a few hours of overlap with colleagues across the ocean. Then, working from 9 p.m. to after 10 p.m. again overlaps with my colleagues in their morning.

Penang Hill

February 25, 2024, Sunday

We finally settled in to the apartment. This morning, embraced by the gentle morning light, PJG and I took a Grab to the famous Penang Hill, passing through the hustle and bustle of the city. About 30 minutes later, we arrived at this highly esteemed natural landscape.

Settled In

On February 23, 2024, Friday, and February 24, 2024, Saturday,

I decided to take a few vacation days to first settle down in Georgetown; PJG set up my workstation perfectly, with the two computer screens I brought from home undamaged. We carefully inventoried the supplies already in the apartment and made a shopping list. We went to the nearby Lotus Supermarket, about a seven-minute walk away.

Arriving Penang Malaysia

Thursday 2/22/2024

After three years of pursuit, a long-cherished wish has finally been fulfilled. The process of realization is like a cup of hot tea gradually spreading warmth on a cold day, warming my whole heart and soul. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a silver lining, fundamentally changing people’s concept of “going to work,” with more and more people starting to work remotely. This shift laid the foundation for PJG and me to realize our dream.

The Mustard Scam

December 3, 2023, Sunday, marks the tenth day of our trip to Mexico City.

Today, our journey in Mexico City concluded with an unexpected twist. In the morning, after packing and storing our luggage at the hotel, we strolled along Amsterdam Avenue. This avenue is famous for its oval shape and design tracing the outline of an early 20th-century racetrack, stretching about 1.9 kilometers, with lush trees lining the path, offering a pleasant view for our walk.

National Palace

December 2, 2023, Saturday, the ninth day of our Mexico City trip.

This morning at 9:45 AM, we took a bus and a subway to reach the National Palace, intending to join the 10:30 AM English-language guided tour. However, it turns out we were misinformed and the tour didn’t start until 11:30 AM …

Monument to the Revolution

December 1, 2023, Friday, is the eighth day of our trip to Mexico City.

This morning, we took a bus to the José Vasconcelos Library, nestled amidst the bustling city. The library is renowned for its distinctive modern architecture and extensive collection of books. It dates back to 2006, initiated by the then President of Mexico and named in honor of José Vasconcelos, a renowned Mexican poet, diplomat, and librarian.

Soumaya Museum

November 30, 2023, Thursday, Day 7 of our Mexico City Trip

Today, our destination was the Soumaya Museum, a palace of art renowned for its unique architecture and rich collection. We originally planned to follow Google Maps and take the bus there. However, after waiting at the bus stop for over 20 minutes, the bus never showed up. So instead, we took Uber again, and after a journey of over 30 minutes, we finally arrived at the museum.

The Cablebús

November 29, 2023, Wednesday, the sixth day of our Mexico trip.

Today’s itinerary added a unique experience to our travel plans. Early in the morning, we walked to the subway station, planning to take the subway to experience the famous Line 2 cable car bus. Unexpectedly, on our way to the subway, we found a machine that was selling the metro cards! — a pleasant little surprise! Metro cards allow us to use all types of transportation.

The Blue House

November 28, 2023, Sunday, the fifth day of our trip to Mexico City

On this not-so-sunny Mexico City morning, our destination was the legendary Frida Kahlo Museum. It’s a popular place, so luckily we purchased tickets before leaving home. After about a thirty-minute Uber ride, we arrived in the Coyoacán area, where the museum is located. Coyoacán is one of the oldest districts in Mexico City, with a history that dates back to the pre-Columbian era. During the Spanish conquest, it became an important base for the conquerors.

Teotihuacan Pyramids

November 27, 2023, Monday, fourth day of the Mexico City trip.

Today, PJG and I set out at 8:30 AM on a journey to the ancient and mystical city of Teotihuacan, a day filled with echoes of both history and modern enjoyment. Our journey began with an Uber ride, weaving through the streets of Mexico City, heading to the northern bus station.

Chapultepec Castle

November 26, 2023, Sunday, third day of the Mexico City trip.

Today, the two of us transformed into urban wanderers, stepping out of our bed and breakfast and embarking on a journey to the magnificent Chapultepec Castle. The journey was surprisingly short, haha, taking only about 25 minutes to reach the foot of the castle from the hustle and bustle of the city. Along the way, we passed through the La Condesa area, a fashionable and popular residential area in Mexico City, known for its unique artistic atmosphere, European-style architecture, and beautiful parks and green spaces.

November 25, 2023, Saturday, second day of the Mexico City trip.

Today, PJG and I immersed ourselves in the charm of the movie ‘007: Spectre,’ visiting the actual location in Mexico City where the opening scene of the Day of the Dead parade was filmed. We knew today we would be walking quite a bit, so we tried taking a bus to get nearer to the plaza.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, and after enjoying a huge and hearty Thanksgiving turkey feast with Matthew, Megan and Justin, we woke up early this morning and at 7:45am, set off for the San Francisco Airport. Time flies; the last time we departed from here was in August when I flew back home to China. Anyway, PJG and I left San Francisco, soaring through the embrace of the clouds and in just a short four-hour flight, we found ourselves in the embrace of Mexico City.

Unique Things In Tokyo

Sunday, June 11, 2023, the 7th day after returning from the trip to Tokyo

It’s been a whole week since we came back from Tokyo, and time flies so fast. After being back for a week at my work, jet lag is basically over. I would like to summarize a few unique things we saw in Tokyo – things so unique that neither of us have seen something similar in our travels around the world.

Bye-Bye Tokyo

Sunday, June 4, 2023, the ninth day of the trip to Tokyo

Day 8 in Tokyo

Saturday, June 3, 2023, the eighth day of our trip to Tokyo

It was still lightly raining in the morning, so I went out by myself to some shops to buy various Japanese snacks. The rain finally stopped at 11am. Today we plan to visit Ueno Park. We took the subway to the famous shopping street, called Ameyoko which is short for “Ameya Yokocho”, meaning candy store alley. After we came here, we found that many of the merchants and restaurants were run by Chinese. There was a mix of Japanese and Chinese dishes and also many shops selling cheap goods. It seems that they cornered a big domestic market here. We randomly picked a restaurant that was not very busy for lunch, and then went to the nearby Ueno Park.

A Rainy Day

Friday, June 2, 2023, Day 7 of the Tokyo trip

We woke this morning to the sound of heavy rain outside. After referring to the weather forecast, it seems that the rain will last all day. We changed our plans and decided to find an art gallery that has available tickets. But I was surprised to find that many of the art museums in Tokyo are so popular.

Imperial Palace Visit

Thursday, June 1, 2023, the sixth day of the Tokyo trip

Today is our real scheduled day to visit the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. We hope our mistake yesterday was worth it, in other words they will require our passports to get in. Also, today is laundry day. The laundry room is on the 8th floor; washing machine is 300 yen, and the dryer is 100 yen for each 30 minutes – decent price.

Day 5 in Tokyo

Wednesday, May 31, 2023, the fifth day of the Tokyo trip

PJG booked tickets for the Tokyo Imperial Palace last month for our visit at 1:30 pm. The weather today was nice, not hot and no rain. It took about 30 minutes to take the subway to the Tokyo Station. After exiting the subway, we walked around Tokyo Station and happened to come across many people gathered in front of the Station watching horse drawn carriages and many policemen.
