Day 14 of South America Trip
The bad news is that PJG’s diarrhea is still not better this morning, and his fever of 37.78c (>100 f) degrees returned. He called our hospital in the US, but unfortunately it was still only 3 am there. The nurse said that she would send an urgent message to his doctor.
Today, again, he is going to rest at home and wait for his doctor’s call. I went to the supermarket to buy a small bag of rice and made him chicken soup and rice porridge for lunch. I ate the left over pork ribs from last night. After lunch, Bear and I took the subway to the “Women’s Bridge” (Spanish: Puente de la Mujer), which is a counterweight cable-stayed bridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The design of the bridge is like a tango dance.
具体信息可以在这里看到 – I took a walk along the shore for a while, then wandered around some more and accidentally found myself at the comic strip street. There are a lot of sculptures of comic characters here. Details can be found here: https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/en/recorrido/comic-strip-walk
On my way back to the apartment by bus, PJG’s doctor called him and said because the diarrhea and fever have been going on for more than 72 hours, she advised him to see the doctor right away, maybe he needs some antibiotics. We took an Uber to a hospital suggested by the Marriott Hotel, about 17 minutes’ from our apartment. I found on the Internet that the medical system in Buenos Aires is relatively developed and many doctors here have received very advanced training, and many hospitals are free. When we arrived at this private hospital, we saw a lady who seemed to be able to speak English. She was very friendly and walked us over to the place to get registered.
After we registered we went to the fifth floor to wait for the doctor consultation. After waiting for less than 10 minutes, it was our turn. The doctor was also very friendly. He did a basic examination for PJG, and then he said he felt it is likely a viral infection, not a bacterial infection, but to be safe, he prescribed an 5 day course of antibiotics, just in case. After seeing the doctor, the doctor shook hands with both of us to say goodbye. Very interesting.
After getting the doctor’s prescription, you can go to any pharmacy to get the prescription filled. There happened to be a pharmacy near the hospital. We got the medicine smoothly and took a pill immediately then took a taxi back to the apartment. We really admire the hospital here so much. It is highly efficient, reasonably priced, and the medicine is separate from the hospital (no collusion). The doctor was very friendly. From the moment we walked into the hospital, to the time when we went to the nearby pharmacy to get the medicine, and then taking a taxi home and without an appointment in advance: it took an hour, and the registration fee was only 5,700 pesos, about US$18. A box of antibiotics plus a bottle of antidiarrheal medicine cost 3,220 pesos, about US$11. It’s just incredible!
For dinner, someone really liked the chicken rice porridge I made him so much, he ordered the dish again, haha. I ordered an authentic Italian pizza and tortured him while I ate.
Today is our last day in Buenos Aires, tomorrow we fly back to Chile, hoping with the medicines PJG will feel better tomorrow.
Translator note: It is really great to have PJM’s blog here so that even though I was stuck in bed for four days, I was able to experience the places she went as if I was there.
I just found this post. I knew some of the hospital story because James texted me & brothers.
I like the comic strip lane. What another unique attraction.
