Santorini Day 4&5

These last two days we spent just enjoying the vacation and relaxing. There were no specific plans to accomplish. We got up in the morning and sat on our deck to have our tea and coffee and watch the scenery and listen to music.

Of course, we did still want to get some exercise, so we hiked to two different parts of Oia, on the back side of the island, where the locals live. There are no tourists, and there are actually not too many locals either, we only saw a few people! Yesterday when we explored the backside there was nothing really worth noting, just a barren area dotted with some local houses.

Today was different. We ventured to an area not far from where we were yesterday but it was much more interesting! We found a very small village called Finikia. There are a few boutique hotels, at least three restaurants, a tiny grocery store and some houses for locals. Through the town was a paved gravel road heading to the beach, so we followed it.

路上遇到了一只冲我俩大吼大叫的狗,我怕的要命,某人把手伸出去,那只狗竟然顺冲地让他撸!(We met a dog barking loudly at both of us on the road. I was so scared until “someone” stretched out his hand and the dog happily licked it – turns out his bark was worse than his bite!
(Looking back at the trail and the small village of Finikia at the the top of the hill)

Along the way to the beach, we also saw some pistachio trees. This is the first time we had seen a pistachio tree. We guessed that it was after the harvest season with only a few patches of lonely pistachios hanging on the trees. Seeing the pistachio tree was definitely a highlight of the day 🙂 We also saw many cactus’s abundant with Cactus fruit along the way. It looked like it was just growing wildly, not for harvesting. We passed by a winery, but all the vines had withered, I don’t know if it is water shortage or the season being over but they certainly didn’t look healthy!

(We also came across some fig trees on the road)

(A withered grape vine. Why are the vines twisted into a circle? Will they come back to life next year? Someone’s brother may know)

We easily made it to the beach and found that it was actually a black sand beach! I had never seen a black sand beach before! It seems to be another gain for the day 🙂 A quick Google showed us why Santorini has black beaches, basically when the volcano erupted 3600 years ago, when the entire island was covered with pumice, volcanic ash and lava, these elements eventually formed the black sand beaches.

Watching the sea and listening to music made our last day in Oia relaxing. We are going to Paros by ferry tomorrow, and looking forward to a much quieter island with few tourists, sleeping until you wake up naturally, and taking in the vacation completely, “with nothing to do”!
