South America Day one
Time flies. After returning from the Mediterranean trip in May, it seems my tax busy season was over in a blink of an eye. This busy season was also my last busy season at the firm as I found a new job! A trip to South America is a small celebration for the end of my life’s journey through public accounting. Thanks to PJG for spending more than a month carefully planning this trip!
We departed San Francisco on the 16th of November and flew for more than 5 hours before arriving at New York’s JFK Airport for our connection. The transfer time was only about 1 hour and 10 minutes and we worried that it would not be enough time to change terminals etc. Fortunately, the plane arrived more than 20 minutes early! So disaster avoided. At JFK, there is a dedicated bus from Terminal 5 to Terminal 8 and it only took 35 minutes from the time the plane landed to boarding our next flight to Santiago, which went very smoothly.
Our flight from New York to Santiago, the capital of Chile, was 9 hours and 41 minutes. It was the first time I was in the southern hemisphere. It is now at the turn of spring and summer, and much hotter than expected. When we got out of the airport, we planned to take an Uber to the B&B. Before we came here, we saw that, although Uber is not legal here, it can be used. This also made the pick-up location for the Uber very unclear and unlike in the United States, there is no special meeting point established. Anyway, we tried to get an Uber but because we didn’t arrive at the pick-up point on time, we missed the car. Hey whatever! Let’s just take a taxi! Of course, you still need to find an official taxi where you can agree on the price before getting in. Surprisingly, the taxi was only about 5 dollars more expensive than Uber, and they took credit cards. So about 22,000 Chilean pesos and 20 minutes later, we arrived safely at our B&B.
After we were settled into our apartment, we went to a nearby MoviStar store to buy two phone cards. (MoviStar sounds like a movie star in English, but it’s a major telecommunications provider here.) I had seen a few YouTubers talking about how they bought phone cards in Santiago and after some research found that MoviStar is the most cost-effective. We were not disappointed! A 50GB card only costs 4,990 Chilean pesos (about 5 bucks) and can be used for 30 days. The process of buying the card was also very convenient although it took three separate steps with three different clerks.
After buying the phone cards and having lunch, it was already past 4 pm and we went back to the hotel to sleep for more than an hour. After the rest, we went out to explore and came across a nearby restaurant where we had our first beers. The district we are staying is called Barrio Lastarria, a lively cultural, gastronomic and tourist center in Santiago. Sitting here, drinking a glass of beer with many lively street performers (drummers and dancers) passing by, left a great first impression of Santiago!
After dinner, we returned to the apartment. It was almost midnight, just in time to adapt to the time here. We will be sleeping in, and staying up late since many restaurants aren’t open for dinner until after 7 or 8pm.
It took me awhile to find this blog post, hopefully tomorrow I will find it easier. Looks like you are off to a great start on your vacation. I have to view the pics with my small iphone, will be nice to view them again at home on my desktop. I like the photo of NewYork City, and the one of the street art, reminds me of your work Zhaoyang.
